    Duval County Coaches
24%(5/21) of the coaches below are new.
43%(9/21) have been at their present school 1 year or less.
38%(8/21) have been at their present school 5 years or more.
Relative to other other populous counties, Duval County has a good number of seasoned/tenured coaches.  However, with 43% of coaches at their school 1 year or less, it reflects a substantial amount of "churn."

5 of Duval County's 21 major football programs have new head coaches this season.

Gibbs is a tough job.  They really have not had any success since Yusef Shakir was the coach.  Abraham had a solid season, but once the Shakir affect was over they were down again.  There is plenty of talent in the building, but keeping that ship moving forward has proven to be hard.  It will take someone that understands S St Pete, and loves the community to have success there.

Lost to Pahokee last year in the KOC. They travel to Pahokee next week, so we will see how they look. I do know they lost a few transfers to Palm Beach Central as well.

They will be solid as always.  One of the best coaching staffs in the state.  The kids there are strong, and disciplined.  They do not make a lot of mistakes, and they play with confidence.  I like them to win their district this year, and who knows after that.

Agree. So many other teams use the same tactics and even worse. I've watched many IMG games and never saw illegal tactics being used. IMG is taught professionally and they play like a college team. Put a college team up against any HS team in Florida, including STA, and see if they can survive the hard defensive tackling and offensive blocking. IMG just hits harder and probably quicker, than most teams.

In 1965, St Thomas Aquinas was 3-6 and was shut out in 5 of those games, including shutout losses to Northeast and Jupiter.  They only scored a TD in the 3 games they won.  Nobody would have dreamed they would be a national power one day.
So, who knows what things will be like when you young guys have gray hair.  Things will probably look very different than today.   If your team is winning big now, enjoy it while it lasts!

As in keeping a coach?  Not as bad as other area schools.  This will be coach Kemp's 3rd season and I don't expect he will leave anytime soon.  He's done something none of the others have done and that is win a district title in his first season; back-to-back district champs and we expect another good year.  Just got to get over the playoff hump.
    Previous Coaches
2010 - 2015  = Jerod "Buddy" Martin, (no relation to Bob Martin) was coach 6 seasons. His record was 36-29.  He's now an assistant in Georgia.
2007 - 2009 = Tim Price was coach for 3 seasons.  His record was 19-13
2000 - 2006 = Darren Bryan was coach for 7 seasons.  His record was 68-13
1996 - 1999 = Phil Rasmussen was coach for 4 seasons. His record was 22-17
1978 - 1995 = Bob Martin was coach for 18 seasons. His record was 150-40

I think that is one disadvantage kids in certain parts of Florida where they don't have much agriculture.  It's a different kind of strength than what you build in a weightroom, isn't it?.  We joke about the big farm boys from the Midwest, but some of those boys got strong without ever touching a weight.

Thanks for sharing that.  Looks like Hallandale won that game 34-26.  Cedar Grove(AAA in GA) has not historically been a strong team, so did not search their records.
Hallandale was very strong that year(ranked top 20 FL per Mexpreps), playing Aquinas tight and beating AHP.  Hallandale has 1350 students and Cedar Grove 1000, so the schools are similar in size.  Cedar Grove (#53 in GA) was 11-2-1 that year.
It's yet another example of two "good" teams(neither amongst the elite from their respective metro areas then) from each state playing each other and being competitive.
If they played this past season, Hallandale likely would have gotten beaten.  They are declining, while Cedar Grove is becoming a powerhouse.   Jadon Haselwood, ranked #1WR in the country, plays for them.

The following teams have not played in at least one state final over the past 25 years: IMG, Melbourne CC, Yulee, and Coconut Creek.  I believe all of the other Florida teams listed above have.  I don't call a team good enough to make a state final "garbage."  ....nor do I call a team with one of the greatest hs rb's of all time "garbage."
The intent of the exercise was to include "good" teams...not just great ones.... so that we could have a substantial data set.  One could easily say that some of the Georgia teams listed above were not amongst their state's best either.  Note that some of the Georgia teams even had losing records, but I still considered them reasonably good programs from a historical perspective.
The intent was not to demonstrate  which state is better.  Even though Georgia has won more games, it does not mean Georgia football is better than FL football.  The data does clearly demonstrate that both states are competitive when their teams compete.  The bottom line is that there have been relatively few games played over the past 15 years between the best of Georgia and the best of Florida.
And concerning those "garbage" teams from I-10...they are the ones who helped bring prominence to Florida when national polls started getting serious attention back in the 1980's.  Those "garbage" teams were clearly ahead of south and central Florida teams in the playoffs back then.  It is now south Florida's time in the sun, but that is no reason to disrespect the part of the state that arguably produced more coaching legends that any other.   As you can probably tell, I don't like the word "garbage," especially when referring to teams...made up of kids and coaches who work their butts off.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has been one of the most esteemed honors in college football for more than 25 years. The student-athletes who are nominated for this award not only demonstrate a unique dedication to community service and desire to make a positive impact on the lives around them, but they also show tremendous perseverance as well as the ability to overcome personal struggles and come out victorious against all odds.

The college football players who have been nominated make it a priority to find time in their busy schedules to volunteer in meaningful ways. Of the nominees, many players dedicate time to reading, mentoring and playing sports with disadvantaged children when they are not in the classroom or on the field. Other players make frequent visits to hospitals to spend one-on-one time with ill patients. One student-athlete even went as far as donating bone marrow in order to save the life of a child in need.

Its DeSoto, trust me.  In the history of their program I can't see where anyone has ever been there more than 7 years.  Seriously, I don't how the last coach there lasted as long as he did; must have some really thick skin! And we they do get a winner, they get ran off.  Consider who has coached there:
Bob Martin: had 2 stints as head coach and was a winner, left and coached at Winter Park, came back, then quit for a couple of years before coaching 18 years at Hardee who he took to the finals twice.
Jim Scroggins: Was a successful coach from Jacksonville who coached the Bulldogs for 6 seasons making them one of the toughest in the area.  Also ran off by the powers that be only to go to Bay HS and take them to the finals and then coach in Georgia.
Charley Tate:  The current coach at Winter Haven started his career as head coach of the DeSoto Bulldogs. Left for a better job at Bartow, then coached Mosley and now Winter Haven.  They should have kept this guy.
Mike Messina: A homegrown DeSoto boy; played for Bob Martin.  Only wanted to coach is home town hs.  Had one down year so they wanted him gone.  He goes down the road to Lemon Bay and coached the Mantas for 16 years and several district championships.
Brad Scott:  Another local boy who played for Bob Martin.  I believe he was coach for only one season.  Goes on to the college ranks as an FSU assistant under Bobby Bowden, then head coach at South Carolina, then an assistant at Clemson.
