Anybody else notice a difference this season? Is this another residual from Covid?

I generally don’t comment on officiating much, because I have found over all the years I’ve played and been a fan, bad calls come from a random black hole in the universe and Karma tends to even them out over a game, a season or a career. I’ve really only seen a couple of instances in my career where a call was nefarious.

I should also say that I appreciate today’s referee. It’s a thankless job, players are increasingly disrespectful and I would have never considered doing that in my day (my coaches would have broke their foot off in my arse, if I had). I watched a kid laugh at a ref sending him to the sideline when he was doing him a favor by not throwing him out of the game.

They’re is such a shortage of refs, its changed the nights we play some games in SW Florida so everyone had a crew to cover their game.

However, I’ve never seen the penalties come like I have this season. I thought it was just the Tarpons, and trust me they’re undisciplined, take too many procedure or offsides penalties a game, and have been awful with unsportsmanlike calls. Most of those they earned. But last week Ft Myers in their game against us had had 195 yards of penalties. We had to be close. It simply took over the game.

This year the amount of holding calls has been astronomical (was there a change in what to look for?) and the frequent ref huddles to discuss calls seems way up. I left our game last night two minutes early, right before the rain and 1580AM broadcast crew were taking about this as the Tarpons where in the process of taking 45 yards of penalties in a row.

**Fast forward, Friday night Nov 5th: listening to the PC Pirates game against Kathleen in the first quarter, after refs twice singled conflicting calls on a line to gain and a PAT.

Then after a slew of flags, one announcer says, "We can only hope this doesn’t turn into a flag fest like the past two games."

The Canes have been very crisp and workmanlike.  This is a different team than I have seen in a while.  The coaches have done their job so far.

As a Canes fan there hasn't been a lot to be optimistic about for  the last 15 years - The Coastal in 2017; The nostalgic beat down of Notre Dame and Four straight against FSU.
In two weeks, they need to use that opportunity to create doubt in Clemson's mind of their invincibility. I feel good about the type players and buy-in of this season. A proven QB and an OC that brought Miami into the modern world.
W or L, they need to keep progressing this system and not have those let downs against teams they should roll.
Miami as a program had to earn their swagger back, not play on reputation, before this transformation could occur.  It will take some time for FSU to,  given the fall-off since Jimbo.  And let's face it, With UF,  UCF and Miami playing well, recruiting isn't going to get any easier.

I am not going to complain. To some extent, FSU's fall is UCF's gain. UCF is in my backyard. FSU is not. Two of my immediate family members have degrees from UCF (undergraduate and post graduate), so while I am not a rabid fan, my sympathies lie with the Knights!

Here's a pertinent article.  It's mindblowing to think of a "normal" sized kid gaining 90 pounds in one year.  Mr Olympia on the biggest anabolic steroid cycle in history would be lucky to put on one third of that in muscle in one year.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/10/15/high-school-offensive-linemen-fat-shaming-health-risks-come-with-territory/"
..a couple of interesting quotes from the article.
"His father and coaches taught him the difference between good weight and bad weight."   A doctor taught me that in terms of potential stress on the heart, there is no such thing as "good," excessive weight, whether it is muscle, water or fat.
"he wasn’t worried about the potential dangers of gaining that much weight so quickly because he didn’t use any supplements."  I'm sure his doctor told him not to worry and I'm sure his heart knows the difference between weight gain with or without supplements.
The misinformation out there about diet is scary.  There are parents and coaches who don't have a clue, but think they do.  I used to know a guy who was the trainer/advisor of numerous Mr Olympia competitors in bodybuilding.  This guy had no academic credentials in physiology, biochemistry, medicine, etc.  Yet these huge guys listened to him religiously concerning their diets and performance-enhancing drug regimens.  One of those guys would eat 5+ pounds of red meat per day.  And many of these guys died or were in terrible shape before age 50.
Back then, guys used to say there was a "safe" way to do big anabolic steroid stacking regimens...wrong.  Likewise, there is no "safe" way for a kid to gain 90 pounds in one year.   Parents and coaches who think there is are kidding themselves.  It's one  thing for an adult to knowingly accept the risk with their own body.  It's another for a parent or coach to enable this risky behavior with a young person who does not fully understand the potential consequences of what they are doing to their bodies.

The Tarpons have played with a lot of undersized O-Lines even why back when I played - I played in the NAIA in the 70s, started three years as the smallest OT in the NAIA at 195, and the other OT was one of the largest at 6'8" 285 - my game was about 24 inches off the ground. Then I moved to my HS position my Sr year at guard. Those O-lines above are massive. I saw Carol City when they thumped Charlotte in the State Semi-final game a few years ago with guys that size - but a few had some footwork.
I agree; you see these great big O-linemen and I marvel how they do it. I've watched three teams big men wear down in three games this season. I could never gain weight, then after football - after 10 years, could never keep it off.
By the way,  here's a couple of SW FL guys to watch: We play Lehigh next week, who has Richard Young, who they're billing as the Top RB in the nation (see below) they have a LB & C that are getting a lot of attention.
We have a couple of guys flying below the radar, Sr. Corner TaiVhain Kelly, lockdown corner, return man;  Sr QB John Busha, 6'2" 200lb physical duel threat; 6'2" Sr WR Niqueu Graham;  6'6" So WR John Gamble; he had two of the nicest toe tip TDs I've ever seen in the last three weeks - incredible body control.

In Punta Gorda, families had a choice to go virtual or Brick and Morter. School went well for the first week, we got a game in the Friday night with 1,000 in the stands, and play in Sarasota Friday.  JV game tomorrow night and Volleyball is playing.
In school, kids are wearing masks (If they get caught not wearing, they get referalls, then if it happens again, they automatically got to virtual school).  Teachers and staff have to have a mask on anywhere on school property. They spray and wipe down desks between each class. Doors are propped open to let students in and out at bell, so no one touches them. The custodians spray a sanitizer every night that lasts for 2 days on desks not being used.
If a student gets sick, or even if one of their siblings gets sick at another school; that student is sent home for two weeks. They do contact tracing. So far so good. But this is going to be a fluid issue.
I think South Florida's decisions were based on trending politics- Local Democratic leaders bucking against  Federal and State Republican executive branches.  I mean how else can you explain my Miami Hurricanes playing tomorrow night in Hard Rock with 13,000 fans allowed and the Dolphins with the same number when they open?

IMG 49 - Venice 13. All considered Venice played a pretty good game. IMG had a load of penalties otherwise the score may have been worse. Both teams had early season jitters causing mistakes. IMG QB is very good. There was a large crowd with the majority wearing masks but no social distancing. I'm quite sure that Venice HS allowed anyone in that wanted to see the game. So maybe there is hope for decent crowds for other games.

In Punta Gorda they pre-sold to parents of team, cheer and band. Then they have the remaining available tickets (up to a 1,000 which is 1/4 capacity) to sell at gate. And, there's a District Wide edict that you have to wear a mask on school property at all times. Kids have been great this week in school. They want to be back.
Charlotte opens with Desoto - the last time this game was in the Fish Bowl, there were between 5-7,000 but that was the showdown between the State's Top Two rushers. This used to be an old rivalry with good traveling fans, but this is a very different year.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for two more days to get to finally see some live football. I think a lot of coaches and teams have worked harder than ever before  under these added Covid restrictions and uncertainty. Credit goes out to all of them, and the athletes  so games can get played.
I'm guessing a lot of people on this site played - think about it being your senior year and being faced with this. If you had a knee or other debilitating injury its hard to accept, but losing a season like this, man it would weigh on me the rest of my life. But then again, I still have reoccurring dreams about two minute drill drives in college.

I played NAIA Ball in the 70s, we had 7 guys from Belle Glade and another six of us from Florida playing in Dodge City Kansas, St Mary of the Plains College - pretty darn good teams.
Our two running backs, Roy Brown and Walt Haslam who both rushed for over 1,000 yds my Sr season (I was an OG). They told me about running down those rabbits when they burned the Cane fields down, 35 years before ESPN ran that story and promoted it with some Miami kids.
Another school, Bethel College out there, had some Pahoke guys.
