  3. So, I got a lot right, some really wrong last week in my personal pickem's for 3a. Let's see what happened.. Berkeley Prep over IMG White by 35 - Nailed this one. Cardinal Mooney over Avon Park by 3- Got this one. Chaminade-Madonna over Doral Academy by 35 - Bingo. American Heritage Delray over Glades Central by 10 - I was really wrong here. What's happened to AHD? 3 losses in a row? Granted all 3 losses were to very good teams, but this one surprised me. King's Academy over Key West by 7- Right, but the spread was off. Benjamin over St. Andrews by 35+ - Bingo. Ft. White over Dixie by 3- Good win by Ft. White! I had them as a 3 point favorite, but they ended up winning by a lot more!! Ocala Trinity over Providence School by 17- Right on! Lakeland Christian over Lake Highland by 10- Correct, but the spread was wrong 1st Academy over West Park Prep by 35+ - Bingo. In my top 2 games of the week, I nailed the Tampa Catholic game. I had TC as a 7 point favorite, but they ended up winning by 13. Tampa Catholic is really coming on strong to close the season. Unless they win out, they probably aren't in contention for a first round bye. Okay, now for the pink elephant in the room. I picked Tampa Jesuit over CCC 35-7. CCC would win 14-6. How could I get this one totally wrong? Tampa Jesuit was selected due to a few factors 1) CCC was really banged up going into the game. I saw on twitter they only dressed 21 varsity players. Tampa Jesuit (according to their announcer via live stream) dressed 77 varsity players. 2) That Jesuit win over Kissimmee Osceola really impacted the spread and the decision. Keep in mind, Osceola had previously beat Viera, Lake Gibson and Winter Haven. Jesuit held them to 7 points. 3) Jesuit is more talented and playing at home. Looking at the rosters, CCC is talented for sure, but Jesuit has a who's who of college prospects. They also have more linemen than CCC had players total. In the end CCC picked up a signature win and proved the computer rankings that have them as a top 30 team right. For what it's worth, I've been told they will he healthy for the playoffs including Johnny Newton returning. Okay, that's all I've got. Look for my updated 3A rankings later this week!

  6. The Bulls and the Tornadoes lost their big games this weekend against Central and Carol City, but put up a fight. Northwestern is 3-5 and has lost to IMG, Carol City, Central, Columbus and South Dade. Washington is 4-5 and has lost to Carol City, Central, Columbus, Chaminade-Madonna, and Northwestern. Let's be real. If some of the current top 25 teams in Florida played the same schedules, they might very well have losing records right now. At the very least, they would have some more losses.

  9. No disrespect to the coaches there, but a team that talented should NOT be losing football games. Whenever they face a team with superior coaching, it shows. I also agree, they need a new person at the top..but they also need a total makeover on the entire staff. Let the local guys assist (from afar). But bring in experienced coaches from elsewhere. But... that's usually a task for any rural football program.

  10. Nowadays we don't see many games like Southridge vs Rockledge. For me, that was an intriguing matchup...a "good" south FL team vs a "good" central FL team. Not that I would want to see the polls completely filled with teams from south FL, but until certain teams from north and central FL, or even certain teams from Broward and Palm Beach, prove on the field they can play with the Miami-Dade schools, I would not bet against a team like BTW in a head-to-head matchup, regardless of who they are playing from north or central FL(except IMG, of course). This year, Palmetto, Southridge and Coral Gables are all sleepers. These teams would give fits to some of the better teams outside Miami-Dade.

  11. How many examples can we find like this? Treasure Coast beat Cocoa 35-29. Cocoa beat Mainland 44-27. Mainland beat Treasure Coast 36-22. We are talking about high school kids, whose performance game-to-game is less stable than more mature athletes. And we are talking about high school teams, even the best of whom sometimes have performance gaps at certain positions that can be exploited by certain teams that appear to be inferior on paper. You would be hard pressed to find an NCAA team ranked 70th in the country who could compete with a top 10 team. But that's not the case in high school. There are plenty of "unranked" high school teams out there who have just the right talent at certain positions, and come in with just the right mindset on a certain night, to beat one of the big boys. Sometimes that top-ranked hs team simply has not yet found their "nightmare" matchup yet. It is a coaching art to peak a team for the playoffs. It's funny, but nowadays, with all of the attention to polls, people want teams flying out of the gates from game 1. Believe it or not, some coaches do not want their their teams performing too well too soon during the season.

  12. BTW just went head-to-head with Carol City for 3 quarters. BTW beat a very good Southridge team that traveled to ranked Rockledge and won. BTW beat a very good Coral Gables team and came within one TD each of Columbus and Chaminade. I think they would even give certain Top 10 teams all they could handle at this time, ie Columbia and Vero.

  14. What is crazy about that, is all the coaches, except the head coach, have collegiate football expaerience. The DC played at San Jose St, DBs coaches played for NC State and Buffalo, the WRs coach played for Western Michigan/Falcons, DL coach UM and I know that I’m missing some.. Offensivley, I don’t think they have an identity, and they can get predictable, which just relies on the athletes. I think there needs to be more creativity, offensively. And on the defensive side, they need to bring more pressure. The Vero game was the only game they really blitzed. i do think they need a new voice at the top though.

  17. At some point we have to be honest about the coaching in Pahokee. Pahokee has been winning games based on talented athletes. The coaching there has never been great. Pahokee is a team that should be undefeated this year. The program needs a head coach, and a offensive/defensive coordinator that is NOT from Pahokee. Those kids are extremely talented and they deserve better. With that said...Pahokee may still very well win 1A (if they can get pass Madison) but that does not negate the fact that the coaching there is subpar. Just my opinion.
