Also, you have to remember that, within each region, district champs are seeded 1 through 4 based on their respective RPI's and then the four wildcards are seeded 5 through 8 based on their respective RPI's.   Often times (more often than not?), the 5 seed (whose only loss may have been to a really strong team that won their district) has a higher RPI than the number 4 seed who happened to win a relatively weak district.   That's why I said last week, somewhat tongue in cheek, that unless I really knew the teams, I'd pick the 5 seed over the 4 seed in most games.  It's kind of like picking 9 seeds over 8 seeds or even 11 seeds over 6 seeds in the NCAA basketball tournament.   From my standpoint, a 5 seed (especially a 5 seed with a higher RPI) beating a 4 seed really doesn't constitute an upset.

Most 1A rosters are between 30-40, with a lot of middle schoolers because they are Middle/High schools

At the start of the season I would guess at some of my picks and get them right. As the year progressed I'd research teams and make a pick based on common opponents, average margin of victory, etc. My picks started to fall off. I've gone back to just guessing.

If the 2 teams played one another the winner got the wildcard spot. Otherwise it was done by total wins of opponents. See reply to @muckboy561

Who remembers the 1999 & 2000 seasons?  Those two seasons there were only 3 Districts per region instead of 4.  Districts had more teams, usually 7.  District champs & runner-ups both got in the playoffs and two at large wildcard spots were reserved for the two teams with the best w/l record.   I don't remember any teams with losing seasons getting in the playoffs and a few of the wildcard teams went deep in the playoffs those years.

3 team districts was the real problem. When there were 7-9 team districts the top 2 had winning records.

When two teams have the exact same w/l record but one of the two beat the other in a head-to-head match up you'd think the winner of that game should be the one that gets in to the playoffs.

Nothing ever is going to be perfect but with 500 Florida football teams and only playing 10 regular season games the RPI will never be as accurate as it should be.

Haines City is 4-1, also independent and might finish 9-1.

Being from a program that gets killed by transfers a lot. Not bashing on any of the teams who are the recipient of the players who are zoned for my school. For it is not their fault. Knowing what players who are zoned for my school and seeing them play for other teams proves that when you are down, you will stay down. If we had those players we could compete. they are stars and starters for other programs.
Players and parents suffer from the grass is greener syndrome. Why would a player with good talent want to play for a loosing program? The true issue is lack of knowledge. It is just assumed that playing for a great program will get you offers, no matter who you are. Being the big fish in the small pond, vs the small fish in a larger pond. We have absolutely no problems getting offers for the kids in our program. For the last 8 years that I have been there. every kid who wanted to go to the next level and had the grades to do it received an offer. Now it wasnt the big D1 offer that they thought they were entitled to! But it was a best fit offer for their talent and cost to the family / student. After all  isnt that what we as coaches are truly supposed to do when it comes to higher education?
We also get a few transfers in as well. Its bound to happen and always a pleasant surprise. The biggest issue for us is the backlash from home-bound education this last year and students becoming academically ineligible. Because we all know kids worked real hard when able to stay home from school and do all work online!
The only real way to stop the transfer thing is to cut it out entirely. You must play for the school you are zoned for period! But we all know that isnt going to happen. Until something is done there will be a huge disparity in the haves and the have nots,  the  programs receiving transfers will continue to get better and the programs who loose players  will continue in their ways.
This isnt a knock on the programs who continue to loose transfers. Those coaches work real hard to retain players and continue to try to build their programs. Some will make it out of that stigma and finally become a higher ranked, more wins per season and able to compete with higher level programs. others will not and its not for the lack of coaching or effort. It is truly the rules and the cards you are dealt.
Recruiting happens all the time, I hear it in the halls, i see texts from players on other teams. I see communications from staffs of other programs. Some will play by the rules, some think they are above the rules. But until there is integrity among coaches it will continue to get worse.

We are having to fight against another group that puts scores in and sometimes something will get missed. We try to lock the scores down, but we do have a few people out there who think they are cute and do things each week. So please... if you all need anything...
