It could be the radiation in the water.  I'll give you the short version without cliff notes, lol.  Four things brought African Americans to Polk County:  Spanish-American war, Citrus, Phosphate and the railroads.

You have to go all the way back the the start of the Spanish-American war when the 10th Calvary (1 of 4) all black Buffalo soldiers was stationed in Lakeland.  During that time, Lakeland and other outlying areas of Polk County amassed large numbers of soldiers that were awaiting deployment to Cuba.  They (and their families) were set up and eventually settled around Lake Wire near downtown in what is know known as the Lake Ridge community all the way north to the Washington Park area near the hospital.  This includes central city where Bryant stadium is now located all the way up to the old Tiger Town air force base on Lake Parker once stood.  Just to give you an idea what I mean when I say "central city", central city  Every town at the time had pockets of African-Americans that were associated with the war with the largest concentration in Lakeland & Bartow.

Citrus is another not thought of industry and back then, Polk County was the largest producer of Citrus in the state all the way until a few years ago.  Before other ethnicities came to be in Polk County, African-Americans were the top choice for menial back-breaking labor and picking trees all day in the Central Florida heat was about as rough as it got.  That further spread African-Americans all over the county especially those with endless groves (Winter Haven, Auburndale, Haines City, Lake Wales and Frostproof).

Phosphate mining was another hot industry beginning in the late 1800's and is still prevalent today starting in South Polk (Ft. Meade) and eventually working its way north to Bartow, Mulberry and parts of South Lakeland now known as Lakeland-Highlands where George Jenkins HS resides.  More so than Citrus, phosphate mining was laborious work and was downright dangerous, both short and long term.  Again, trying to be politically correct but what group was favored to do what others didn't want to do?

The railroad industry is big business in Polk now but it was really big back in the day.  When you take into account the man power to establish and maintain the rail infrastructure to move Citrus, cattle and phosphate to points north and to/from the port of Tampa, the railroad probably had the largest noticeable impact on Polk County.  Bone Valley (Mulberry and Ft. Meade) consists of an intricate rail network that crisscrosses Polk County before heading west to Tampa, north to Winston in Southwest Lakeland using either the Seaboard Air Line or Seaboard Coast line where they meet at Diamond Junction in Auburndale.  Polk County was one of the few places in the state where both companies were in direct competition with each other before deregulation and consolidation into what is now CSX.  A few miles northeast of Winston, there was a 180 acre rail repair and refurbishing yard on the edge of downtown Lakeland bordering Kathleen Rd.  That area is now home to the recently opened Bonnet Springs Park.  That area is also located in central city where large swaths of African-Americans still reside generations later.  Winter Haven, Lake Wales and Haines City also had burgeoning rail industries and a few have railroad museums that chronicle how the railroad impacted their communities.  The next time you're in Polk County and you happen to be in a town/city and you notice railroad tracks, there's a good chance there's some African-American history behind it and it probably shows.

How that translates into what you deem as continued D-1 success, I can only contribute that to the grind and historically, it wasn't hard to do being surrounded by Hillsborough, Pinellas, Osceola and Orange.  No disrespect to anyone affiliated with a school in those counties.  However, those are the facts.  The first Lakeland school to capitalize on integration was Kathleen given their new location and proximity to the defunct all black Rochelle High School and the neighborhood in which it served.  Lakeland was better in basketball and Kathleen was the football King.  Fast forward a few decades and both schools have swapped roles.  However, Lakeland was a little more resistant to change as it was known as the more upscale of the two.  When I was in high school 91-94, a popular chant at games against Lakeland was "Sink the Snobs" as the school pulled from wealthier, more established South Lakeland neighborhoods including Lakeland Highlands until George Jenkins opened in 1993.  The rest of the county for a long time were one schools towns so there wasn't a massive tug on talent like it is in Lakeland.  After that, Winter Haven lost some personnel when Lake Ridge opened (1995).  They have always had a decent amount of athletes but Winter Haven bleeds into Auburndale.  The 2nd city to truly suffer was Haines City with the opening of Ridge (2005) and if you take a look at their records, you can see the shift when the Oak Hill community that once drove Haines City was split.  What also happened around the same time (2003) is the city of Lake Wales created it's own charter school system and although in Polk County, operated independently of Polk County school district.  That really made things difficult talent wise in East Polk as Lake Wales was able to take in students from anywhere but primarily up US27 into Haines City/Davenport and 540 into Winter Haven.  The Blue Devils are one program I do not envy in football as they are literally smack in the middle of most of the high schools in Polk County.

Great Polk history lesson there Nulli, much appreciated. In my day (early 1970's) Winter Haven had basketball legend Otis Birdsong (NY Knicks) who knocked my Bucs out of the playoffs my senior year and Haines City was a monster in Track and Field. I also played with QB Victor Smith at BCC who came out of Lakeland or Kathleen. Both of whom were better than us. Thanks again.

One last fact. Lakeland was the biggest recruiters and cheaters and were busted which led to crazy state rep messing with the fhsaa and high schools. Just telling the truth here. Go Venice

That's why Mainland High has the longest consecutive "Public School" playoff streak in the state of Florida. Mainland is currently at 29 years and it started in 1994. Lakeland High's streak started in 1993. Don't remember the year (2010's ?) when they were disqualified but that ended their streak. ( Shameless Homer Plug ).

  3. Nulli, lets see how delicate I can put this and not run afoul of Josh's heavy hand. It appears most of Polk's success is after Florida's integration of the races in 1970. Also lets give coach Bill Castle a shout out for laying the ground work and showing/teaching followers how it is done. If I'm not mistaken H.O.F. Coach Rick Darlington falls into this group. Much like Brevard's county's coach Gerald (Jerry) Odom and his followers/students/ball players. My wife has family in Plant City. I've been there, seen the strawberries, and seen a little of the mining operations. Throw in a few cows and horses and I've haven't seen much more "industry".  What "BROUGHT"  in the large group of African-Americans that to this day keeps rural Polk County with an endless supply of D-1 athletes. What's over there ?  It can't be the water, Pasco county and Zephyrhills got that.

I thought Columbia would beat them soundly, but boy, was I wrong. Best of luck to your Bucs. Don't overlook them!

Impossible, with two weeks, to overlook a team 14-0. Mainland's head coach ( Travis Roland ) was a 1st Team All-State LB'er on Mainland's only Championship team (2003). He brings plenty of intensity and wisdom to the table. I may have seen more talented Buccaneer teams in the past, but you can rest assured this one will give 100% heart and effort to win that game and the title that comes with it.... Buc Forever.

    My predictions:

STA does just enough to defeat Homestead.

    Venice wins over Lakeland.

    Hawthorne edges Northview.

    Trinity Catholic defeats First Baptist.

Cocoa leaves their late scares against Bradford behind and dominates FSU High.

Columbus hands Apopka a second straight championship loss.

    Chaminade BIG over CCC.

Lake Wales takes a convincing win over Mainland.

Central completes their dream season and overtakes AHP to claim the state and national championship.

    Homer prediction :

Mainland beats Lake Wales and wins the 3S title. ( Lake Wales ain't Miami Central ).

That is not a double foul, that would be considered multiple dead-bowl fouls. A double foul is a live-ball foul on each time during a down.

Jeez, I bet Jambun sleeps in his officiating uniform.....shoes and all. Rumor has it, he threw a flag on a lady friend the other night for " Roughing and illegal touching." Seconds later, he picked up the flag .......with a smile on his face.

It would help if they broke down which class plays on which day , as well as the times.

Agree 100%. Unlike some my experience with the FHSAA has always been good and I generally try not to pile on knowing their hands are somewhat tied in decision making and 50% are going to be pissed off regardless of what they say or do. ( "Perspective" made the same point on another thread.) Scheduling is totally their call to make, and there is no excuse not to have it out weeks before the finals. Families and teams must travel. Plans must be made ahead of time. No way should the FHSAA drag this out.

Sarcasm aside, I actually like the idea. Although, it's a shoo-in this year as the winner of Miami Central vs AHP in 2M will represent the state as the best team in Florida, and maybe the best team in the nation as well!

To quote Lee Corso, " Not so fast my friend."  Chaminade-Madonna is undefeated and beat AH-P  42-34 this season...better recognize   :)

Cocoa has been dominate against 2S opponents all year outscoring them 350-16.

This past weekend they routed 12-0 #1 seed South Sumter 35-7 and that 7 came on the last play of regulation.

Blake Boda has thrown for almost 3500 yards and 45TDs while rushing for 3 more. This lefty should be a lock for 2S player of the year and maybe dairy farmers player of the year.

They have one of the best WR groups maybe in the country led by (2) 4️‘s… 23’ Ohio State commit Ced Hawkins and ESPN top 300 24’ Day Day Farmer. They also have a huge target in 6’5” converted basketball player and 3️ Kyon Calhoun. They have 7 players with over 200 yards receiving on this team, 9 players with receiving TDs, and 11 have caught a pass from boda.

Their entire starting oline returns next year and has not given up a sack against a 2S opponent. Senior RB Anthony bridgewater has rushed for +500 yards behind them and 4 TDs but man can he pass block. This converted LB along with sophomore Malachi will make you regret blitzing!

Defensively, their entire secondary is committed or holds a D1 offer, they have 2 of the top ‘24 LBs in the state with Samadre Hawkins and Davion Parham. There DL is big, athletic, well coached and anchored by 3️ Loren Ward and senior Dorsey.

Cocoa has 5th year HC Ryan Schnider at the helm looking to make it to his 3rd state final as a Tiger. He won state championships previously with U School and St Thomas. Early on, Coach Schnider was critized for the teams 2-2 start losing to jones on the last drive where they sacked his QB for a safety and the getting beat soundly by his former program. Those 2 loses don’t look to bad anymore as that’s likely the 3M state matchup. They also lost to seminole in OT but that game unfortunately probably cost seminole their shot at a state title. Seminole’s FAU QB Commit hasn’t played a snap since that game.

Lastly, one of their biggest advantages is Coach Schnider has assembled an impressive staff around him with 3 former head coaches on staff, a former NFL player,  9 military veterans, and almost every staff member played college football. Having this type of staff with the current state of coaches pay in Florida is pretty crazy!

This isn’t a good team, it’s a good program and i can’t see anyone stopping cocoa this year

Cocoa....a diamond in a sea of mediocrity

Whether your county has 1 TEAM or 4 TEAMS it is still an accomplishment as your list has 24 counties represented out of 59.  So at least you aren't one of the 35 left out.

Ray, where did that 59 come from ?  Not doubting you, but who are the 8 counties that don't play FHSAA football... just curious if you know.

  11. Don't remember seeing this, but please refresh my fading memory. Adjusting enrollment numbers

a little may be in order :

    4M vs 4S

    3M vs 3S

    2M vs 2S

    1M vs 1S

All eight teams above are "Champions" either Metro or Suburban Champions. But the four game winners are "Florida State Champions."  All the older gentlemen out there remember pro football's AFL and NFL's  separate championships. The FHSAA could add the four "Super Bowls" and many of  our differences with the brackets would go away. Food for thought. Pardon me if this dead horse has already been buried. It's new to me   :)

  12. Tonight I attended my 13th Regional Championship Final with my alma mater Mainland High School. I've now witnessed 8 region title wins and 5 losses since 1998. And the opponent Jenson Beach was, without question, the weakest third playoff round team I've ever seen. Unless a dozen starters or so missed the bus to the stadium, how did they win 10 games ? They were small, slow, and not particularly athletic. When the members of "3 Suburban" were first announced many thought it appeared very thin with quality playoff contenders. Nothing I've seen so far has changed my mind on the subject. Mainland next plays at Ft Myers Dunbar and Lake Wales host Columbia High from Lake City. In two weeks one of these survivor's will be a state champ. Why not Mainland ?  Buc Forever.

To answer your question, having lived in Georgia, it is a somewhat confusing but interesting system.  Each class has 8 regions (think "districts") with 6-8 teams per region.  Round-robin play with top 4 teams advancing based on region record.  So 32-team bracket.  One team from each region is placed in each of the four 8-team sub-brackets, cross-seeded with the adjacent region.  Bottom line is all 4 teams from a single region could conceivably qualify for the state semifinals (as could 2 teams from the same region qualify for the finals).  As this is not easily explained in words, view brackets on GHSAA website if you want a visual.

I like the crisscrossing. Sorry your school can't afford it......wash some more cars. Also that Miami Central could play Miami Northwestern in the final. Or any number of neighboring powerhouses from the same area. ....SB ?

  14. 4 minutes ago, Ray Icaza said:

Actually Perspective, you are a little late to the party.  The NCAA instituted their version of M and S years ago which they apply different metrics calling them Division 1, 2 and 3.  Even within Division 1 they separate the power schools under the names FBS and FCS.  Just curious why they would do this??

Ray, I think they call it sarcasm... tongue in cheek

  15. Many, many, good ideas/opinions have been proposed on this thread. I like Nolebulls, Venice, and Columbia's six classes . If you're the best of "any 100 schools" you get a trophy. I also agree with Cribboy and let's allow metro's and suburban's to play "UP" like in the past so the truly best teams aren't knocked out early.  Let Miami Central, MNW, AH-P, or any school play in the bigger classes with STA or Miami Columbus. I too, like most, don't like the unlimited transfers. BUT why restrict an athlete, many of whom are disadvantaged, from movement to better increase his chances for exposure and success in the only field he excels in when other students with high academic strengths, musical talents, are other  performing arts skills can transfer to the best schools their parent's money can buy.  Columbia is also right about are current political environment. Freedom for one is freedom for all. My son is good in football. Your's is a mean saxophonist. Let them go where they want or can afford.

Before y'all crown Columbia, they have to get by Choctaw first

You are correct. And in looking up the Choctaw team I was shocked to see it is coached by Mr Frank Beasley.  To many of us old message board posters from Rival's Flavarsity ( Darter, Laz, Coach Ty, Mark, Wave, Eric, Tony, etc )  Mr Beasley was a beacon of hope, respect, and fairness as an administrator with the FHSAA. I can't speak for all you helped, but from me , thanks for everything. Good luck coach.

If those stand the test of time it will entail a pretty long trip for the lower seeds and that can be a factor.

But too repeat....without the south Florida monsters, it's a sunny drive in the park.
