OldSchoolLion got a reaction from gatorman-uf in Kudos to Forest Hill
Between 2006-2013, I believe Forest Hill won only 6 regular season games. Since 2014, the 7A Falcons have won 25. Last year, they played in only their third playoff game in school history.
But they could never beat district foe, Dwyer, right? Well, in 2015, playing #1 state-ranked Dwyer, Forest Hill was ahead 10-7 in the closing minutes of the game. Dwyer needed a fantastic catch on a 4th down conversion to keep alive a drive that allowed them to score a winning TD with only one minute remaining.
Forest Hill is off to a 2-0 start this season and could very well be undefeated when they face off with Dwyer next month. Regardless of what happens, it has been a great turnaround for the Falcons. Props to the players and coaching staff.

Will cost you $20. I figured some would prefer not to pay that, so am posting the scores.

Nice to hear. If the kids had fun, that is all that matters. Some of these states not known for football in the past are getting better.

Could we see a Wekiva vs DFB game? Atlantic maybe. Wish Carol City, Central were in with 8A

OldSchoolLion reacted to Jags904 in Deerfield Beach in for 2 Big Fights
In 2014 when Buford played Trinity, they were less talented but about a million times better coached. That wasn’t the case this time. I think Deerfield was decently well coached but I was less impressed than usual with Buford’s coaching.

Since some of ya'll like ranking folks and may not have seen the games, here are my thoughts in case they might be of some use. If ya'll want to argue amongst yourselves, go knock yourselves out, but I am not that in love with my opinions to want to argue about mine. So take 'em or leave 'em.
American Heritage - The most well-rounded Florida team I saw this weekend. Strong, big d-line that can shut down the run. Pass coverage was very good. No glaring weaknesses on the defense. I think their offense has potential to be better than they looked against a very tough St Joe defense. They have some athletes. I'm not talking a "lights out" offense, but one that can offer a reasonably balanced attack and can score points with the run or the pass. Showed poise and mental toughness hanging in a very tough, close game. I had heard they lost a lot and considering that, I was pleasantly surprised.
Wekiva - As good a run defense as you'll see. Although they gave up a couple big passes, db's look talented. Offensive line will overpower many teams. Offense may hold the team back against elite competition if they cannot achieve more balance. My sense is that they don't quite have the same level of athleticism as AHP on offense, but could be wrong. QB Sean Robles has the size, but was inaccurate..maybe just a bad day. If I had to bet on a game between AHP and Wekiva, I would take AHP in a close one.
Cardinal Gibbons- Difficult to judge because they were missing their defensive leader. Struggled with both run and pass against a balanced Milton offense. QB Scalzo is very mobile and will make things happen against many defenses. Like Chaminade, I think they could not put up enough points to win against Wekiva and think AHP could beat them fairly easily. Could see a game versus Chaminade being a toss-up.
Chaminade- Their D line lacks size/physicality to deal with elite level O-lines. Defensive backfield is full of studs. On offense, WR John Dunmore is a stud and qb Daelen Menard is mobile and accurate. Chaminade has a talented receiving corps. Willie Davis at RB is shifty and has potential to break loose. They have an offense like last year, built for big plays but not necessarily for long drives. In a game vs AHP or Wekiva, I think their D line would get worn down and struggle against the run. Dunmore is going to get lose at least once per game against anyone, but I don't think Chaminade could put up enough points to beat Wekiva and I think versus AHP the point differential would be greater. Team showed some lack of poise when things were not going their way.
Mainland - Defense gave up a lot of points. Run defense is solid but pass defense is a liability. D'Andre McMillian is fabulous at rb, but can't do it alone on offense. Mainland would struggle with any of the teams above.
Sorry, but did not watch the Douglas game.

...another point, for what it's worth. Our teams from Florida do not consistently blow out (or even beat) better teams from states that some say are inferior and have less speed and overall talent. So far this season, some of our Florida teams have not exactly lit up OOS competitors. Deerfield Beach and American Heritage needed last-second scores to win. And some lost. As explosive as our athletes are, it is not uncommon for us to put up less than 35 points in a game. So, either our offenses are lacking a certain explosiveness and/or the gap in talent and execution may not be as great as some believe.
I believe other states are slowly catching up to Florida in certain aspects of the game. Some states that did not use to be considered hs football states are now consistently producing high quality talent, ie Utah. Florida will always have great athletes, but is the hs football game as a whole really improving in Florida? For instance, are we producing better linemen or qb's than we were 25 years ago? It is easy to get spoiled and rest on one's laurels when talent abounds.

If they could have been a bit more accurate they could have won by more. That run game opened up so many chances at deep passes, but seemed to just not work out.
OH and the best catch I've seen this year

Wekiva defense as advertised...nasty.

OldSchoolLion got a reaction from SFL SPY in Chaminade vs Muscle Shoals
Chaminade-Madonna won this game, but to beat a team like this by one TD is embarrassing for Florida. Muscle Shoals had a good defense, but was completely one-dimensional on offense. Their running back was nothing special, and overall speed of MS offense was "slow" by Florida standards. CM was undisciplined and made some costly penalties that allowed MS to stay in the game in the second half. The entire game was marred by penalties on both sides. CM likely would have lost to Bob Jones and would have gotten killed by Milton.
Although MS's defense was tough, expected CM's offense to do a lot more. CM is missing Shaun Shivers big-time! CM has a bigger O line than last year and still couldn't open holes. I don't think there was one big run for CM the whole game. CM's qb Menard has skills but outside a few long passes to Dunmore, it was pretty much bubble screens in the second half. CM does not have the offense it did last year.
As I said before, CM's defense can be worn down. Their D line is not built to handle big O lines (which MS definitely had). If MS had a big, talented back it could have been ugly. Hard to assess CM's secondary, but we know they are talented, at least on paper.
Between C-M and Cardinal Gibbons, I see two teams who were overhyped because of a few big-name players. Nothing against them, they don't control that. It's comical to hear the commentators talking about all of the offers of certain Chaminade players while the team is playing so poorly in front of everyone's eyes. HS games are becoming like a big commercial for colleges.

Vicious hit after catch causes fumble and scoop for 55 yard TD. Defense winning the game for Wekiva. Neither offense terribly exciting.

Clutch moment right before half SJR gets 1st and goal on the one. 45 seconds later AHP scores. Huge turnaround.

OldSchoolLion reacted to DarterBlue2 in Wekiva vs North Gwinnett
Wekiva will struggle against any team with a solid defense. It's not that their offense is bad, it is not. But it's not championship caliber either. The strength of Wekiva is their defense. If their defense does not get put in terrible field position situations several times during the game, it has a chance of holding most strong high school offenses to two scores or less. The key against North Gwennett, is for them not to bet put behind the eight ball too often. If they can accomplish this, they have a shot at winning a close game. If they cannot, the NG is an easy winner.
