Ready to be shocked?  Mississippi has the highest representation per capita of any state on the ESPN 300 list, with 14 players.  For some perspective, south FL (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties) had 18 players on the list and the population in south FL is 6 million people... double the population of the entire state of Mississippi.

Below are the top 20 seniors from Mississippi and where they rank at each position.  16 of them have offers from Alabama and/or Auburn.  All have multiple Power offers.  Interestingly, you have likely never heard of any of the high schools they attend.  In fact, there is not a single MS team in the Maxpreps Preseason 100.  Last season, there were only 8 MS teams ranked in the top 500 teams on Maxpreps.  Yet, the college scouts are finding them, even in the backwoods of Mississippi.

#7 and #21 D-T QB

#17, #21, #36 and #47 ATH

#3 RB

#17 and #30 WR

#36 OT

#8 and #10 DT

#11, #24, #25 and #47 DE

#3 and #4 OLB

#56 ILB

#6 CB

1. Mississippi-14 players on the ESPN 300

2. Georgia-36 players on the ESPN 300

3. Hawaii-4 players on the ESPN 300

4. Louisiana-14 players on the ESPN 300

5. Florida-43 players on the ESPN 300 (including 7 Florida boys on IMG)

The population of the entire state of Hawaii is about the same as Hillsborough County...1.4 people.  That is about half the size of Miami-Dade County.  So, 4 players may not seem like much from a state, but Hawaii is a tiny state(#40 based on population)!

It will be interesting to see if this trend to recruit in Hawaii continues.  Hawaii is producing some big linemen.  Based on their names, am guessing they are of Samoan descent.

Interesting you mention Ohio, muckboy.  Ohio only had 8 players on the ESPN 300.  My impression is that Ohio has really dropped off in terms of talent production over the past couple of decades.  It is a fact that many of the large cities in Ohio have experienced huge drops in population due to disappearing industry and jobs.   In some way, I think this is impacting hs football in Ohio in a negative way, ie parents leaving the state to find work.
