Who Was This Great RB? Shawn Bane/Riverview

Recommended Posts

As a hs freshman, he averaged 100 yards per game and led his central FL team to the state final.  In the following year, he rushed for nearly 250 yards and knocked off the top-ranked team in the country at that time. Due to some life circumstances, his football career was cut short, but he is often recognized as one the true greats from his area.  Tragically, he passed away earlier this year.

Who was he?

Where did he play in high school?

Shawn Bane, Sarasota Riverview

John Sprague, former coach of Sarasota Riverview, called Shawn Bane the best rb he had ever seen.   In his sophomore year against Manatee, the top-ranked team in the nation led by quarterback Tommie Frazier, he rushed for 241 yards in Riverview’s 35-28 win.  He had a child in high school and did not play his junior year.  He returned for several games in his senior year, including a playoff win in Lakeland in which the Rams hung 55 points on the Naughts.  He went out to the West Coast and played one year of junior college ball before hanging up his football career.  Many believe he could have been a success in the NFL had he stayed focused on football.  This past Christmas season, Bane was involved in a terrible car wreck and had to be put on life support.  He died right after the new year.
