Quiz-Which Hard-Luck Playoff Team Is It?

Over 10 Miami-Dade County public schools have won state titles over the years under the FHSAA.  Three public schools made it to the state semifinals but never made it to a state final.  North Miami Beach lost to Northwestern 42-20 in the 2006 state semifinals.  Back in the 1980’s, Homestead made it to the state semis twice, losing to Titusville(1982,29-0) and St Petersburg(1984,23-20) in Class 3A.

The third Dade County public school, who has never made it to a state final, has the ultimate hard-luck story.  Over the past 50 years, they have made it to 4 state semifinals, losing all of those games by a total of 16 points. Each of those games was played under a different head coach.  3 of those 4 semifinal games were played in the past 20 years. This is a really up-and-down team who has shown flashes of brilliance, but rarely consistency.

Which school is it?  C'mom south FL dudes, you should be able to figure this out.

Miami Jackson

It is Miami Jackson!  Jackson's four state semi losses:

1969 Brandon 7-6

1998 Northwestern 15-14 Read about it below..maybe the most famous comeback in Dade County history

2000 Dillard 6-0

2012 Immokalee 29-21

Soul Bowl #2

In 1998, #1 ranked Northwestern met Jackson in the state semis in a game known as Soul Bowl 2.  Over 35,000 attended.  Down 14-2 with 2.5 minutes left, NW hit a bomb to bring the score to 14-9. NW did not recover the onside kick and with no timeouts left, the game was virtually over. After three plays, Jackson had the ball on their 24 yard line with 10 seconds left.  Jackson's coach called for his punter to turn tail and dash for his own end zone to give NW a safety.  Instead of inserting his punter, who had already fumbled once in the end zone, he called on the sure hands of his back-up quarterback. Junior Ronnie Jones lined up ten yards behind center and waited for the ball to fly into his hands.  He didn't wait long enough. Jones, who was in for his first play of the game, began to run toward the end zone even before the ball reached his hands. The ball fell to the ground, where it was swarmed by players from both teams. When the pile was unknotted, Northwestern owned the ball on the ten-yard line -- with six seconds left to play.  Now the game rested on one final play. Northwestern's offense lined up in a tight formation. Quarterback Sheffield took the snap, stepped back two feet, planted his cleats in the turf, and lobbed a blimp toward the south corner of the end zone. Northwestern receiver Antonio Bryant raced to meet the ball while jockeying for position with two Jackson cornerbacks. Bryant, taller than both his foes, was also savvy enough to stop suddenly and position himself in front of them. The ball landed in his outstretched hands as he fell to the ground.  Bulls 15-14. NW went on to win the state title.

Good job badbird!
