Since 2004, 6 teams have won a state title with less than 10 total passing yards in the title game.  Interestingly, 6 different private schools were the losers in these games and 5 of the winners were public schools.

Who were the 6 private schools and who beat them with their rushing game?

2016 cocoa over Bolles is one

I actually called cocoa winning by double digits in this game for 2 weeks

In 04 Lakeland ranned STA off the field 39-7 I think

Lakeland rushed for 358 yards in it incredible 45-42 2OT win over St Thomas Aquinas in the 2006 5A finals.  In one of the best rushing efforts in state title game history, Chris Rainey of Lakeland rushed for 276 yards and 3TD's on 26 runs, including 2 runs of 50+ yards.  Lakeland only attempted 2 passes the entire game for a total of 5 passing yards.  Jeremiah Harden of STA did quite a bit of damage of his own, rushing for 174 yards and 4 TD's in the game.

Rainey scorched STA in 2004 as well and Lakeland ended up with 356 rushing yards in that game.  Lakeland did pass the ball quite a bit more in that game, though.  So, right teams just a different year, Flo.  Good job!

St Thomas staged an incredible comeback in the 2006 game in the final quarter and turned what had been a comfortable Lakeland win into a nail biter. The son of the Lakeland coach was the QB and he was just a game manager. I think at the end, St. Thomas was stopped right at the goal line to preserve the Lakeland win.

Madison ran all over Tampa Catholic in a state title game.

Madison County rushed for 386 yards on 56 attempts in its 28-7 Class 2A final win against Tampa Catholic in 2007.  Madison's Chris Thompson rushed for over 200 yards and Corey Akins rushed for nearly 150 yards.  MC only attempted 2 passes the entire game and completed neither.  On defense, MC shut down TC, allowing them only 100 total yards of offense.

Good job Hwy17!:)

Sorry didn’t finish typing. Pensacola over Belen Jesuit?

Pensacola High rushed for 318 yards on 46 carries in its 28-7 Class 3A final win against Miami Belen Jesuit in 2009.  It was the first and only state final appearance for both teams  Pensacola's Prince Ashanti rushed for over 100 yards.  Pensacola only attempted 2 passes the entire game and completed neither.

Good job Bocefous!:)

In the 2006 Class 1B final, FAMU beat Victory Christian 14-10 and actually had negative passing yards for the game, completing 1 pass of 3 attempted.  Richard Watson of FAMU rushed for 123 yards on 21 carries.

In the 2010 Class 1A final, Trinity Christian beat American Heritage Delray 27-10.  Trinity only attempted one pass during the game, which was incomplete.  Trinity rushed for 322 yards.  Andrew Buie of Trinity turned in one of the more memorable rushing efforts in state title game history, rushing for 242 yards on 31 carries and 4TD's

    • FINAL: DILLARD 21 MONARCH 15 In a game that featured one team who was in the state semi game last year in monarch who got even better through the transfer portal in the last few months ; Vs a Dillard team with a 2nd year head coach who has a lot to prove coming into this season after a lack luster 2023 season.    OVERALL- this game had a feeling of a playoff game. Both teams played their starters well into the 4th quarter, add the big crowd for both teams, the hard hits & the bands going at it, it felt like a game with huge implications yet we are only in May.    In my early in the week predictions I had monarch winning this game 28-21 simply because in my opinion they had the better team and the better offense. More skill players & the better line play within the trenches.    THE GAME: monarch came out on their second possession moved the ball down Dillards throat to take a 7-0 lead, only to see dillard come back on their next drive and tie the game 7-7. after that it was pretty much all Dillard. The defense played way better than expected & the offense while have a few kinks to work out showed some signs of being able to be something special come august.    after jumping out 7-0 dillard scored 21 consecutive points to go up 21-7. The knights scored a TD with 2 min left to make it 21-15 but the panthers got 2 first downs to run out the clock to get the victory 21-15. OBSERVATIONS: Monarch is once again going to be very good this year. Their online and Dline is massive. Their 4* running back is one of the best in broward & their overall team is going to give a lot of teams fits.    DILLARD: the panthers are going to be a huge dark horse this year. They look to have another solid defense, they’re not massive in the trenches, but they have some dawgs and appear to be well coached.    with the off season to go , Dillard can turn some heads this season, and they proved that tonight with a good win over a quality inner city opponent.
    • Solid win for a spring matchup between quality opponents.
    • Congrats on the win darter.
