Just got done watching the broadcast of Cocoa's intrasquad spring scrimmage and it looks like they found their week 4 opponent. With the updated schedule now they have Trinity Christian at home for week 4. So that gives them 9 out of 10 opponents in the HSFA top 300 on their schedule.

Why would these teams be listed with the rest on that list? Oh I get it you just naming names not really Caring if those teams are actually still elite on a state level

The new QB was very solid. It took a little bit for him to settle in but once he did the offense started rolling. Cocoa will put up big numbers again through the air with his size and ability. Not to mention they have playmakers all over the field especially the outside. Solid receiving corps with home run ability with a 6'5 receiver and 6'5 TE that went up and grabbed everything.  Great RB as usual. Defense is definitely solid again. Only thing that was concerning were some of the plays the DBs didn't stop. Which was surprising because they should have one of the best defensive backfield in the area. Then again their top DB didn't play on the defensive side at all. He only played a little bit at receiver. They should do well next season heading into the postseason they will be ready for a state run.

The future is definitely bright at the QB position with a rising freshman set to backup. He made solid throws and always made the right decision against a defense that was flying all over the place. Which says alot for an 8th grader playing in that scrimmage. He's around 6'1 so again the future is bright.

You might want to be careful, Keem.

I find it interesting that a kid who transfers from one school to another after fall football but before spring football is not permitted to participate in the spring football practices/games for his new school.  With that in mind, I was struggling with whether an 8th grader could participate.   I took a look at the FHSAA policy and found, somewhat to my surprise, that 8th graders can participate as long as they meet a whole bunch of conditions (sign off by both principals, insurance, physical, etc.).   At the very end of the list are these two conditions:

18.2.5.8 The students may not participate in a spring football jamboree or spring classic game.

18.2.5.9 The students may not participate in practice or have physical contact in any manner with student-athletes in the 9th, 10th or 11th grades who are members of the high school team.

It would appear that an 8th grader is "made solid throws and always made the right decision against a defense that was flying all over the place" was participating in practice, unless that defense was composed solely of other 8th graders who also met all of the conditions.

But, having said that, Cocoa probably doesn't have anything to worry about . . . if the FHSAA isn't going to punish coaches who conduct team practices when such practices were expressly prohibited, they probably aren't going to care much about an 8th grader participating in an intrasquad scrimmage.

One of Cocoa's standout defensive linemen who was a focal point for them was a 5 year starter including his eighth grade year.

Holy Trinity will also have 8th graders playing on their squad as well. Which I didn't know that they had 7th and 8th graders at their academy.

I honestly didn't think there would be anything against it especially if said school is a junior/senior high

I know this a football thread but how about when a 6th grader wins state and then again as a 7th grader. Funny how some other programs are trying to take 8th grade wrestling out of the state championships. Honestly, I think the other schools are trying to stop Bas from winning 6 state titles in wrestling. The kid has paid his dues and lives to wrestle. Too bad some coaches get butt hurt when their seniors get beat by a 6th and 7th grader.

Dada White started against Bishop Gorman when he was in the 8th grade as a LB. BG was ranked #1 in the nation then.

    • I seriously can't remember how many times I had to do that very thing. Like Nolebull said in another discussion, the kids know kids from other schools and where the "hot hand" is. I never entertained discussions with kids or parents of kids from other schools. I know we lost some good ones because of it but I am ok with that.
    • In a single word, "no." In a lot more words, see the following: (From 2023-24 FHSAA Handbook) 36.2 GENERAL DEFINITIONS 36.2.1 Athletic Recruiting. “Athletic recruiting” is any effort by a school employee, athletic department staff member or representative of a school’s athletic interests to pressure, urge or entice a student to attend that school for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics.   and this . . . 36.2.2 Improper Contact. “Improper contact” is contact, either directly or indirectly, whether in person or through written or electronic communication, by a school employee, athletic department staff member, representative of the school’s athletic interests or third parties, such as an independent person, business or organization, with a student or any member of the student’s family, in an effort to pressure, urge or entice the student to attend a different school for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics.  See Policy 37.    In fact, if the kid contacts the coach at another school, the coach is not supposed to communicate with the kid other than to refer the kid to the person at the school responsible for admissions.    Best I can tell, there is no exception for being able to reach out to a kid who plays a sport that is not offered by the school that the kid currently attends.  Perhaps there should be . . . but then you'd really be opening Pandora's Box.
    • So you are not allowed to talk to a kid who is not an active football player currently attending a school that doesn’t have a football team?
    • 1.  Ask around and get the kid's phone number. 2.  Call the kid.  3.  If that doesn't work, DM the kid.  4.  Once communications are established, try to convince the kid to come to your school.  There may be other ways, but I think this would be the easiest way to recruit a kid .
