Lakeland 56  Bartow 6

That's with 2nd & 3rd stringers likely taking over in the 2nd quarter. Lakeland could easily put up 50+ by halftime if they want (and they did against Gibbs).

What happen to the coach that got them to elite level

They've had seasons where it looks like they are getting on track.....then the coach leaves and it falls apart the next season. There are probably kids walking around the halls of Bartow who could help that team, but they just don't want to be a part of it.

Polk County had a number of coaching legends who moved on...Paul Quinn at Bartow, Rod Shafer at Lake Wales, Faris Brannen at Frostproof.  The entire county lost some of its mojo compared to years past.

I think the same is true at a number of schools.  Lord knows there is a ton of talent in Polk County..always was.  Some of these schools, like Bartow, used to be considered rural and the kids there 30+ years had that tough, workman-like attitude.  The kids grew up working outdoors from a young age and got strong.

As those areas have become more urbanized, it seems like some of their schools have lost that "edge" that made them nasty on the football field.  Football was deep in the roots of Polk County...really a part of the culture.  For whatever reason, some kids are being pulled in a different direction.

That seems to be the case from what I have heard.  A ton of nobody cares apathy.

Bartow is a mid-sized town; only 15 miles from Lakeland and about 40 miles to Tampa.

Fort Meade, Frostproof, Mulberry, and Hardee are small.
