Which States Are Producing the Most NCAA OL & Where Does FL Stand?

Listed below is every Power 5 school and the states of origin of each of their starting offensive linemen, as listed on each school's depth chart.

Which states have the most offensive linemen starting today at Power 5 schools?  California and Texas

Which states have the most starting offensive linemen today at Power 5 schools outside their home state?  California(19), Georgia(18), Texas(17), Florida(14), Ohio(13)

Which state, per capita, produces the most starting, Power 5 offensive linemen today?  1. Georgia(by a substantial margin), 2. Ohio   

 

Interesting notes:

-14 Florida-bred players are presently starting offensive linemen at Power 5 schools in 11 different states outside Florida(bolded below).  6 are from North FL, 5 are from Central FL, and 3 are from South FL.  A number of them are from schools not typically considered as powerhouse programs.  

-No offensive linemen from Miami-Dade, Palm Beach or Hillsborough counties currently serve as a starting offensive lineman at any Power 5 schools outside Florida. Orange County has 1.  

-Only 11 of 64 Power 5 schools have 4 or more starting offensive linemen from their home state.  The Canes and the Gators are amongst these 11 teams.

-Only two linemen from Miami-Dade county serve as starting offensive linemen at a Power 5 school.  One is a freshman and one is a sophomore, and both play for the Canes.

-Georgia is a state that is being heavily recruited for linemen.  Georgia has offensive linemen starting at Power 5 universities in 11 different states, including California, Oregon, Indiana, and Massachusetts.

-A number of ACC schools have expanded their recruiting for offensive lineman to outside states, even Western states like California.

In another post about the Canes and the Seminoles, I mentioned lagging offensive line play.  As much as a hotbed south FL is for hs talent, I believe it is lagging in offensive line play relative to certain other parts of the country, ie Ohio.  Universities from all over the country are recruiting south FL for DB's, LB's, WR's, etc, but the information above demonstrates that universities are not looking nearly as hard there for OL talent.  It blew my mind that not a single Miami-Dade OL starts at any Power 5 school beyond the Canes.

Texas universities recruit OL's heavily from within their state.  FL universities have taken a similar approach, but it is possible that there is simply not enough hs OL talent in FL to go around the state schools and maintain all of them at an elite level, especially with the emergence of USF and UCF and subsequent competition for recruits. 

The Canes have two underclassmen starting on the OL.  In today's game, if a kid is going to start as an OL as a true freshman on a Top 25 team, he should probably be playing well enough as a hs senior to start in college.  I don't think there is enough emphasis on OL play at some FL high schools to have the kids ready to hit the ground running in college.  If they were ready, I think we would see a lot more kids from FL starting on Power 5 teams outside the state and/or being recruited.  Even some of the colleges that recruit very intensely in FL, ie Kentucky and Louisville, don't have anyone from FL starting on their offensive lines.  

All that said, I think we will continue to see lagging OL play at FSU and Miami unless recruiting strategies change and/or FL high schools start emphasizing OL play to a greater extent
