Vanguard over Lake Wales in 6A Round Two

The Knights dominated on defense and earned a 19-0 shutout win over the Highlanders on Friday night in the Class 6A, Region II playoffs.

Vanguard pressured Lake Wales on 17-of-29 dropbacks in the passing game, with 13 of those coming on 16 passing attempts in the first half.

Bryce Langston (four quarterback hurries, four knockdowns) and Andre Jones (two sacks, forced fumble, tackles for loss), Malik Pertee, Jordan Monroe and Tyler Kirkland-Lecorn (sack, tackle for loss) weren’t blocked all night by the Highlander offensive line.

Lake Wales ended with 65 yards rushing on 23 carries and finished with 160 yards of total offense.

Trevonte Rucker continued his stellar postseason play with 113 yards rushing on 13 carries, as well as a solid passing night (7-of-11, 132 yards, two touchdowns).

Both of Rucker’s scoring passes went to Leonard Manuel (four catches, 86 yards, two touchdowns).

In the win over the Highlanders, Vanguard finished with 375 yards, keyed by 243 yards rushing on 44 carries.

And to think Rucker is only a Sophomore. He's going to be around for another two seasons.

Manuel is the player I was talking about previously. He's a complete WR and it doean't hurt that he's 6' 5" and 220.

Old school lion had reservations about Vanguard's defense, in an earlier post. I agreed that in two or three regular season games the defense looked anything but stellar. However, in the two playoff games so far this defense is certainly lights out.

Next Friday the Knights host tough and skilled Armwood at Booster Stadium. I'm thinking, though, that this may be the time that Armwood meets its match.

Armwood goes to Vanguard. Vanguard is the 1 seed in the north. Armwood will have to travel to Vanguard this week and would have to go to Navarre if that ended up being the semi. Crestview can not have a home game no matter what happens.

DUUUUH on my part. Sorry, I am in overload.  Thanks for correcting me.

Nvm I thought Vanguard was a private school.

Nope. It's public. And, the only public school in Marion County that doesn't have its own field. Booster Stadium used to be a joint venture between Vanguard and Forest HS similar to Citizen's Field in Gainesville.  Forest got a new HS and of course a new stadium. Vanguard HS is one of the oldest in the county and needs to be torn down and a new HS built. I won't hold my breath, though, as I'm averse to dying.

If vanguard only one who uses Booster stadium couldn't they just hand over control of stadium to vanguard and call it their home stadium?

I'm not 100% sure if the stadium and property is owned by the city or the county. Possibly it's privately owned by "Boosters". Hopefully Vanguard will get a new HS as the current one is as old as dirt and should be demolished if it were up to me. With that said, Booster Stadium is well kept up and a nice venue to watch a game in. I'm told it's a nice field to play on also.

    • The biggest problem at public schools right now is 2 things. One, they are hiring radicals who are more interested in indoctrinating kids with extreme ideologies rather teaching them basic fundamental skills to become well rounded adults. And 2, they are not getting rid of the worst students who take from the kids who want to learn. If kids skip school they should be expelled. Drugs. Expelled. Fights. Expelled. They can stay home and do E-learning. But these public schools keep, and sometimes cover up crimes and poor behavior. Get rid of the kids who don’t want to learn. You gotta tighten the ship
    • Better to have some kids thrive, then none. Every kid who goes to a private school and thrives is a net benefit to society. Plus your scenario assumes that the private schools don’t already have great teachers taking up all spots available
    • I’m glad those recruiting rules don’t apply to Broward & Dade county…….
    • Or the private schools will use their combination of private money and public money (i.e., vouchers) to hire away the best teachers, leaving the rest at the public schools to teach those who don't have the resources -- even with the vouchers -- to send their kids to private schools.  Of course, if this happens, there might be a few folks who will brag that it all worked out the way it was planned.
    • Yeah, if you're in a in a program that has accountability and structure the season never really ends. January to August is when you win championships. I just hope the fans understand and respect that. The coaches should be paid accordingly for the time, effort and sacrifice they put in for the school and football program. Oh, and that 100 degree heat aint no joke for the players, trainers and coaches.
