16 coaches in Florida high school football history have won 250 or more games.  Only 3 of them are still actively coaching.  Who are they?  Below are some hints.

1. This man has coached for 42 years at the same school.  His teams have won 6 state championships.  He has won more games than any coach in central Florida history and he has the second most victories of any coach in Florida high school football history.

2. This man has coached for 40 seasons at 3 different high schools in Broward and Palm Beach Counties.  His teams have won 3 state championships.  He is #4 on the list of all-time coaching victories.

3. This man has coached for 36 seasons at 4 different high schools in central Florida.  One of his teams won a state title.  He is the most winning coach ever from the Orlando area and he is #6 on the list of all-time coaching victories.

The Killer Bs

1. Bill Castle (Lakeland)

2. Byron Walker (Archbishop McCarthy)

3. Bill Gierke (Orangewood Christian)

Gierke has never won a state title. His mentor and coach, Larry Gergley, I believe, did at Bishop Moore before moving on to Winter Park where he coached Gierke.

I stand corrected. It is Gierke. He tied Southridge for the 1991 5A title at Evans High.

This is scary folks.  Our top 30 winningest coaches in Florida high school football history, all with 200+ career wins...27 are retired and these 3(3 of the top 6 winningest coaches in FL history) may be hanging it up soon.  Are the days of coaches who dedicate 30+ years to high school football in Florida disappearing?

1. Bill Castle, correct

2. Byron Walker, I assume that's correct.

3. Larry Gergley

Remember, these are active coaches.  Gergley retired in 2006 after 33 seasons at Winter Park and 2 at Bishop Moore.  Best he ever did was a state semi appearance with Winter Park in 2005.  35 seasons and no state finals...that's dedication and persistence!  #11 on all-time list with 274-109-2 record.  Gierke surpassed him to become the winningest coach in Orlando area history.

Since the 3 B's are #'s 2, 4, and 6 on the all-time list, who do you think are #1, 3 and 5?

1 and 3 should be easy(both private school coaches)...#5 not so much, but I will give you a clue.

He left coaching a long time ago and there is a stadium named after him in north Florida.  If you don't get this one ColumbiaFan, I will lose all faith in you.

5 is Gene Cox (Leon)

1 is Corky Rogers (Bolles)

3 is George Smith (STA)

Still one of the dumbest decisions Columbia ever made

They had several chances to hire Gene Cox who was a Columbia alumni but refused to, if they hired him back in the 70s instead of Leon then we would have multiple state titles in the 70s and 80s and maybe even 90s if he chose to coach that long

Then again it was also same time as another dumb mistake of firing Paul Quinn after the 1970 season, if he had stayed Columbia would have eventually won state again

Shouldn't be surprised though, they made those decisions because of political garbage from worthless boosters

..outstanding, ColumbiaFan.  Am glad you are aware of Gene Cox and those titles he won at Leon.  Did you know he coached at Suwannee?????:(

1. Corky Rogers 477-87-1 record , coached at Lee and Bolles

3. George Smith 361-66, coached at St Thomas, retired in 2010

5. Gene Cox 313-100-5 coached at Aucilla Chritian, Leon, Suwannee and Jefferson Countyretired in 1995

Note:

Castle would need to coach at least another 4 seasons to catch Rogers

Cox has a stadium named after him in Tallahassee (NOT Lake City, where he was from:rolleyes:).  When he retired in 1995, he was #1 on the list.

To prove the Columbia Tigers are the Cleveland Browns of FL HS Football with personnel/coaching mistakes, and to make them  look more foolish  , are you aware that besides not hiring Gene Cox, and firing Paul Quinn, they also lost ties with  Paul Quinn's Asst. HC.

Some guy by the name Bill Castle who went to Lakeland with Quinn and the rest is history!

Brilliant!
