To make matters worse, there are three Metro Orlando area teams in the finals. How do I keep my objectivity?

@nolebull813, you probably laid down the rules before the playoffs, but I am old and forgetful. Further, there are only 6 games in the finals that are up for consideration. Therefore, it is quite likely that we will end up tied. What were/are the rules for a tie breaker. Personally, I think in the spirit of fairness it should be something like total points in one of the games or final margin in one of the games.

With that said, I am obligated to abide with whatever was decided before the playoff brackets started. However, before I make my picks I would appreciate a refresher so I know what I am up against.

Higher seed from the regular season wins the tie breaker. That’s you. So all you have to do is wait till I pick, and then pick the same teams. Lol.

I am going to make honest picks. I don't want to win that way. If, for some reason, my picks mirror yours, it's not because I am doing what you said I can. In fact, to make it more honest, I would agree to using some kind of points/spread on a designated game to break a potential tie.

Looking at the teams you have picked there's at least one difference between what I am currently leaning towards and the teams you picked. If that one difference remains, there will be an outright winner. However, there could possibly be two differences. If there are two, we could end up tied if we split wins. As of now, we are in agreement in at least 4 of the 6 games, and possibly 5.

I need to do a bit more analysis and research and I will post my final picks Monday evening.

I will no later than Monday evening. If it can't be a tie (we have one difference or three differences), then there's no need for a tie breaker. If we have no differences (very unlikely unless I have a divine revelation) or two differences, then you will come up with a tiebreaker.

Yes that is the plan

Cocoa - This will be a difficult game for Cocoa as GC is no slouch. I am going to pick them because I think they are more complete and they have more big game experience. However, I could easily see an upset.

MNW - This should be my easiest pick of the finals. I would be very surprised if the Bulls lose.

AHP - Jones will not be at full strength and AHP has more finals experience. With that said, Jones is undefeated for a reason and I expect they will fight to the end.

STA - Despite both being in the finals, I believe that both teams have had relatively disappointing seasons. I feel the game is a toss up and I am picking STA because they usually, somehow find a way to win toss up games.

Osceola - This is another toss up game. I can see it going either way. But I believe Osceola will pull it off as they are the more physical team and have more deep playoff experience. It won't be easy.

Lake Mary - I have gone back and forth in my head over this one. Venice has more Power 4 talent; but I think Lake Mary has the best player with the most upside potential on the field. I also believe that the Rams will not be intimidated and will come to play 48 minutes of football. I will celebrate the triumph of a team that is largely home grown. Enough said.

@nolebull813, unless you change any of your picks, we have two differences: 1. The Lakeland vs St. Thomas game; and, 2. The Venice vs Lake Mary game. Therefore, please post the tie breaker. I would like to suggest you use the Osceola vs West Boca game or the Cocoa vs Gadsden County game. I believe these will both be very tight and there are several criteria you could use to come up with a fair tie breaker.

Cocoa vs GC 52 points

Osceola vs WB 40 points

you make your total picks for each game and we will choose the one game with the largest difference between myself and you as the tiebreaker

Fair enough. See my totals below.

Cocoa vs GC = 49 points

Osceola vs WB = 35 points

Hopefully, we won't need the tie breaker as I expect ST. Thomas and Lake Mary to win. But just in case, we are all set.

If one of the games has a ton of points, then hats off to you.

We are only using the WB/Osceola game as the tiebreaker. I picked 40 and you picked 35. So basically 40 and above I win the tiebreaker, and 39 and below you win

I want

Cocoa

MNW

AHP

Lakeland

Osceola

Venice

With Lakeland's loss, if Lake Mary wins, it's over! If Lake Mary loses, then the dreaded tie breaker kicks in the Osceola vs West Boca game. So, depending on the score in the first game today, the championship may be determined today at around 3 to 3:30 pm.

Yea sir. If the WB/Osceola game is 39 points or below you win it all! If it’s 40 or more then it comes down to Venice/Lake Mary!

    • There has been talk amongst Desoto and Hardee about this recently.  It has the SSAA written all over it.  The few athletic directors I’ve spoken to that have moved over to the SSAA are pretty pleased with their decisions. Not sure what to say about the state’s oldest rivalry leaving the FHSAA.
    • I've been told that Hardee has applied to join SSAA and can only assume the others have as well. Frostproof & Labelle are already SSAA members.  Play won't begin until 2026. Honestly I would not be surprised if more schools don't follow suit.   Here's the article: SEVEN FLORIDA SCHOOLS TO FORM HEARTLAND CONFERENCE By DOUG DONNELLY Seven high school football programs in central and southwest Florida have announced the formation of a new athletic conference, the Heartland Conference, set to begin competition in 2026. The conference will consist of DeSoto County High School, Frostproof High School, LaBelle High School, Lake Placid High School, Lemon Bay High School, Hardee High School, and Avon Park High School. Organizers say the similar-size schools are joining together with a mission to advocate for Florida High School Athletic Association rules for the greater good of the development of student athletes. Consistent scheduling, natural rivalries and geographic proximity are benefits of the conference. Play will begin in the 2026-27 scheduling cycle so that schools can honor current contracts. “The rebirth of the Heartland Conference will be exciting for communities, fans, players, and coaches,” said DeSoto County High School coach Clifford Lohrey. “The opportunity to create stability in the continuously changing world of high school athletics is important for rivalries that are heading toward extinction. The chance to have both conference and district play in our schedule is important in creating an environment where every game matters.” Jason Mensing, head coach at Lemon Bay, echoed those sentiments, adding that the schools share a common philosophy. “The Heartland Conference will provide our student-athletes with consistent, high-quality competition against schools with similar demographics and geographic proximity,” Mensing said. “This will also create more opportunities for local rivalries and enhance the overall experience for our players, coaches, and fans.” The conference aims to create a more level playing field for each member school, fostering closer and more exciting contests. Despite some additional travel, schools fit a common footprint with similar enrollments in addition to being in geographical locations that limits rapid shifts in student movement. “Frostproof is very excited to rekindle an old relationship that creates a competitive excitement and experience for our kids,” said Richard Marsh, Frostproof coach. Lake Placid head coach Jay Del Castillo said his district is enthusiastic about the future of the Heartland Conference and the positive impact it will have on their football programs. “How exciting it is to get like-minded coaches together for a common goal of benefiting the kids,” Castillo said. “Not only will this give them a chance to compete against their fellow friends, but it gives them another chance to be seen and honored for their hard work throughout the season.” Guidelines for the awarding of trophies and post-season honors are being drafted now. “Avon Park is excited for the return of the Heartland Conference,” said coach Lee Albritton. “All of the coaches and programs that are joining have similar mindsets and goals for our programs and doing things certain ways. We look forward to competing with all of these program’s year in and year out for the Heartland Conference championship.” For more information on the Heartland Conference, contact Jason Mensing, Heartland Conference president.
    • I'm getting this info from Sun Sports feed (SW FL news) on facebook but I can't find any official online news stories yet about.  The article named Lemon Bay, DeSoto, Frostproof, Lake Placid, Hardee, LaBelle and Avon Park as founding members.  It is an alliance of like-sized programs that want stability and a level playing field. I suppose they weren't interested in the SSAA which seems to have the same goal?
    • Gives a whole new meaning to "I'm going to take my talents to South Beach..."
    • You know better than that!  Besides, if they aren't moving for "academic" reasons, who's to say some would bend the truth just to save face?
