Fort Lauderdale High - A Great Success Story

The Fort Lauderdale Flying L's completed the 2018 season with an 8-2 record with a 22-0 victory over Stranahan.  This is their first winning season since 2005.  Richard Dunbar is in his ninth season as the head football coach there.  In his first season, the Flying L’s went 0-10 against a schedule including 6 FHSAA playoff teams. More important than wins and losses, Dunbar went about changing the culture of Flying L’s Football in 2011, stressing accountability and discipline from his players on and off the field, while continuing to encourage his young men to persevere athletically and academically.

Dunbar came to his high school alma mater in 2006 and served as the JV Coach after a one-year stint as OL coach at his college alma mater, Webber International U.  He served in various coaching roles at FLHS until being appointed HC.  In a county known for coaching turnover, Coach Dunbar is a rarity.  He is amongst the most tenured coaches in Broward County.  Most impressive is that he invested in the school for the long term, and has endured some rough times and losing seasons.  Praise should also be given to the FLHS administration and fans for having the patience to allow him to build a program.  Many folks don't understand that it normally takes 5+ years for a coach to build a sustainable program.

The Flying L's appear to have a good chance of making the playoffs in 7A-R4.  They have not won a playoff game since appearing in the 2A state final in 1966, over 50 years ago.  Will this be their year?  Let's hope they can get a playoff win, because this team and coach has really paid their dues and been persistent.

Coach Dunbar is married to Jacquisa and they have seven children.
