  1. Personally, for the larger classifications, I like the concept of districts and I like that district champions are assured of hosting at least one home playoff game. As long as there are 8 classifications, public and private schools playing together, free transfer rules, and areas of the state that put more emphasis on youth football than others, there are always going to be blowouts in the playoffs -- especially in the opening rounds. It's inevitable. But Districts change. Some teams move up a class and other teams move down a class. Coaches retire or get fired. One school or another becomes the "hot" school for a certain period of time and then, for whatever reasons, they cool off again. Regression to the mean. Winning a District title ought to get a team a little more than just some stitching on their varsity letter. It won't surprise me at all if, over time (and so long as the current system - or one like it - is in effect), 5 seeds have a better winning percentage in the state playoffs than 4 seeds, at least in 5A-8A. In a match-up between the winner of a relatively weak district and the best team in the other three districts in that same region that doesn't end up winning their district, I'd take the non-district winning team on the road most of the time. But, I still think the district winners should continue to host the first-round games.

  2. Missing from the list is Victory Christian (2A Lakeland) ** been to last 6 state semi-finals (lost finals in '13 & won in '14); only other team in Florida to be in last 6 semi's is Cocoa.

  3. Be careful you are starting to sound like me and my rants about returning to district champions and runner-ups. But if we are going to keep the current system, all they needed to do was spread points out more for victories and losses. No longer are playoff Tier 1 teams gaining less points than a victory over a Tier 4's loss. Big wins count more. Tier 1 Victory: 70 points Tier 2 Victory: 55 points Tier 3 Victory: 45 points Tier 4 Victory: 40 points Tier 1 Loss: 35 points Tier 2 Loss: 30 points Tier 3 Loss: 20 points Tier 4 Loss: 5 points Again the question comes down to when deciding who makes the playoff, is the goal to give every team that has a chance a spot (even if this allows teams that have no chance in) or only teams that have a chance to win (but leaves 1 or 2 teams that have a chance out)?

  4. While at the bottom Duval is demonstrably bad per the above. Duval's public schools won two state titles this year: Mandarin and Raines. So, in my opinion, that leaves Pinellas as the sole county in third place.

  7. Here is is folks.."Just ask RIPI" for up to the minute RPI numbers, guaranteed 50% or less margin of error. And for a small fee you can get with one with your team logo. One can also pay extra to get the special "bitch and whine" feature. When coach complains to RIPI about the numbers, RIPI will console you by making statements like "You're right , coach. This new system sucks."

  8. No problem, Gatorman. They are way ahead of us. Each coach will be given a football-shaped computer named "RIPI." All coach will have to do is "ASK RIPI" and he will get an up-to-the-minute update on the playoff status of his team or any other.

  9. You can stop bashing Dunedin we are officially going independent and going to create a schedule that includes the villages school for the blind combined with leto, Gulf, Pasco etc for the next 2 years. I exaggerate but this is something I have been saying Dunedin should do for some years... They have to play teams that they can actually compete against gain some wins and confidence and perhaps attract more kids to the program.

  10. interesting fact...Between 1994-2010, a Miami-Dade team won the 6A state title(the largest class at the time) 10 out of 17 years. Since 2011, a Miami-Dade team has won an 8A title just twice in 8 years...South Dade in 2013 and Southridge in 2016

  11. Ron Simmons, Jimmy Jordan, and Paul Piurowski were all Tampa Bay Bandits. Billy Capece was the Bucs kicker in the early 80's and was the victim of one of John McKay's best one-liners. After missing a few easy kicks in a game, a reporter asked McKay about Capece's status with the team and McKay famously said: "Capece... is kaput." I agree about the lineman. In that era, the O-line got off the ball much, much faster and hit much harder initially because most teams ran the ball. You wanted quickness off the ball to get the Dlineman out of the way and so the guards could pull. The era of the fat, behemoth lineman has made the game less technically enjoyable.

  12. Orlando Evan's for sure. I remember one year (late 80's) they had the largest offensive line in FOOTBALL....yes ALL of football. Saw the big boys myself when they played Vero Beach back in the day. Ft Lauderdale Dillard: man....those cats could play. Fast...Fast...Fast. Miami Southridge: Not sure if they belong here or not, but those Davis Brothers could really play back in the day. Not hearing much from them as much as we used to. Okeechobee: Could always hold their own against anyone. Big country boys could just beat you up.

  13. Yeah my point was STA's schedule didn't look fancy. Nothing new, no big travel etc, but the reality was those 6A Broward publics plus Ely were very strong back then. STA, Dillard, Ely, Plantation, DFB were all in the same league, but Ely and STA had much easier paths not being in 6A. Believe me STA would have had plenty more 2nd and 3rd round exits if they were in 6A back then, and I'm not sure they win one just because it was such a grind. Shit was rough in 6A back then!

  14. Chip G had health issues and between that and a lack of administrative support when the Olympia principal came over (she had run Bob Head away from Olympia), he called it a day. Some of the staff he had at Evans for that brief run are now at Wekiva and have created a thorn for the Darters.

  15. Thanks for the response. Completely agree that ... Broward was a different scene back then and much tougher Going outside Broward then did not necessarily mean it would be a tougher game. Chaminade would have had difficulty with Ely, Dillard and Deerfield in certain years. Ely, Dillard and Deerfield were not powerhouses every year between 2000-2005. Deerfield was strong 2003-2005, but not terribly special 2000-2002(their deep run in 01 was the result of an easy playoff path and then Apopka waxed them). Dillard's program dropped off big-time in 03 and did not recover. Ely was pretty tough througout, but not every team was like their 02 team. I never said St Thomas had an easy schedule back then...just a pedestrian one compared to Chaminade's. It wasn't simply the teams Chaminade played, but the fact that most of their games against much larger schools were on the road. If we want to question the fact that Chaminade did not play some of the Broward powers back then, fair enough. But I think that also forces us to question how successful teams like St Thomas and the Broward powers of the day would have been had they routinely met the true Miami-Dade powers of that day. Actually, IMO, the late 80's were the best times for the Broward teams versus Dade.

  17. What ever happened to Chavell Buie? He had a knee injury or something right? Seeing him go ape on defending Texas champ Abiliene (highest classification) was priceless! I remember seeing a video of some dudes from Texas and they were straight dumbfounded at the result lol. edit found it!!!!

  18. You could probably add Orlando Evans to that list. In 1991 it was co-state champion and in the 1980s through 2001 was a perennial playoff contender. Today, Evans struggles to win two games in a season. It is not as if athletes are not there. Basketball still does pretty well and the soccer program has had some success over the past 10 seasons. A good staff with the commitment and administrative buy in, could potentially return Evans to playoff contender status.
