  1. I think the argument for separating publics and privates is losing strength. In 4A, Cardinal Gibbons will have to deal with Booker T and Carol City in the south, and Bolles will have Cocoa in the north. In 5A, American Heritage will have to deal with Northwestern. If they are able to get past them, they have Raines and Vanguard in the north. St Thomas' playoff path just got a little tougher, and they have not won a state title two years in a row due to public schools. Chaminade and Trinity Catholic are virtually competing in a private league in 3A. Outside those teams, which private school(s) is really a threat? Not that I am completely averse to separating them, but I don't see a big justification. ...just so some folks don't have to deal with a few private schools, all of whom can and have been beaten by public schools? St Thomas is the best of the lot, and though excellent, they are not exactly dominating the better public schools.

  2. BIGGEST WINNERS 1st Place - Miami Northwestern Miami Central, Carol City and Mainland are out of the way in their new region AND class. The only teams that likely stand in Northwestern's way each year in their path to the 5A final are American Heritage Plantation in Region 4 and Jesuit in Region 3. And with Bolles and Trinity leaving 5A in the North, it could make things much easier for Northwestern to win a state title in 5A. 2nd Place - Deerfield Beach Atlantic, Miramar, Piper, Plantation, and Western all move out of Region 3, and Vero Beach is the only perennial contender to move in to take their place. Southridge is now out of the way in Region 4, though DB will still have to contend with South Dade and Columbus. 3rd Place - Miami Central Northwestern, Carol City and Mainland are out of the way in Region 4, which is huge. They do get Southridge, though. And with the addition of Braden River and Jefferson to Region 3, that region may not be quite the pushover it has been in the past for the 6A Miami teams. BIGGEST LOSERS 1st Place - North Marion Just when North Marion found its mojo and won a region title...now they get a host of contenders joining their region, including Bishop Moore, Jones, and Vanguard. And despite Bolles and Trinity Christian leaving Region 1, they get the pleasure of dealing with Raines if they do make the 5A semifinals. 2nd Place - Western Western gets thrown to the lions in 8A Region 4 and will have to contend with Columbus, South Dade, Palmetto and Coral Gables. Wildcats are tough, but lions they ain't. 3rd Place - St Thomas Aquinas 7A Region 4 was arguably the weakest region in the upper classes...not any more. Miramar has always been a thorn in STA's side, and now they join them in the region. And Atlantic could be just as much of a pain to STA as Dwyer, if not more so. Plantation, North Miami and Homestead could all provide some resistance, as well. Interestingly, Homestead gave STA fits in the playoffs back in the 1980's. STRONGEST REGION 1st Place - 7A Region 1 With Lincoln, Crestview, Niceville, Navarre, Fletcher, Wekiva, and Edgewater, this region is stacked, and should be ultra-competitive. 2nd Place - 8A Region 4 Even with the loss of Southridge, this region is still packed with talent..South Dade, Palmetto, Columbus, Coral Gables, and an up-and-coming Western and Piper squads. 3rd Place - 6A Region 1 With Columbia, Lee, Gainesville, Mainland and Ponte Vedra, this should be a fun and competitive region. WEAKEST REGION 1st Place - 6A Region 2 This region wins it hands down. Only 3 teams that made the playoffs last year, and not one that made it past the first round. When Clearwater, Gaither and Largo are the best in a region, well...need I say more? 2nd Place - 5A Region 4 Outside Northwestern and American Heritage Plantation, it's slim pickens. Mark your calendars for this region final. 3rd Place - 7A Region 3 Outside Venice, Dwyer, and Manatee, this region is really weak. This is just for fun and to generate discussion. What do you think of the selections? It's fine to disagree! ...not that any of ya'll need encouragement.

  3. Plant and Dr. P are tied up two a piece in playoff matchups. Outside of 2011, Plant didn't field very strong teams when it was in 8A. I think their in a better spot right now.

  4. I know. The Treasure Coast is really on the bubble between North and South. Used to be South in the early 2000s then became North for several years ending this year. But maybe this is the spark to get VB to Orlando. You never know.

  6. 6A District 12 is kinda interesting with Braden River, Charlotte, Port Charlotte and Palmetto. 3 of the 4 won first round playoff games this past season. Port Charlotte did not make the playoffs, but came within a TD of Charlotte. 8A District 1 with Mandarin, Oakleaf, Bartram Trail and Sandalwood could be another interesting district that could produce multiple playoff teams.

  9. So miami central is already the fave for next year? I mean i understand why they would be. But u cant over look DILLARD Who led miami central 7-6 in the second quarter and trailed miami central 28-20 with 3 min left in the 4th Qt. Threw all the tough teams that was mentioned that made 6a tough dillard wasnt mentioned hmmmm

  10. In the upper classes, one would be hard-pressed to find a more competitive district than 7A District 1 with Lincoln, Crestview, Niceville, Navarre, and Chiles. This might be the district most likely to send 4 teams to the playoffs. Worst? Not sure I want to think about that. LOL There are a number that could challenge for that title. I will say, after making myself cross-eyed looking at the new regions/districts, I see better parity. Although some teams will have an easier playoff path now, all gained at least one new, formidable foe in their way. In that sense, I am impressed by the new alignment and amazed they managed to avoid creating a free ride for at least one team. Northwestern hit the jackpot, but AHP will definitely be a new challenge.

  12. What do you think are the best new districts and worst districts? Btw 4a region 4 might be strongest region I saw Also agree on 6a region 2, seems like that region will be a breather game for whoever wins 6a 1 before a likely showdown with Miami Central in finals

  14. decision was made 2 days ago. jeff Rolson. Also osceola is still in that region but 8A North is not loaded with teams that have tons of transfers so it is easier to make it there and win it than 7A

  15. That’s how St Johns County & Clay are as well. Duval has found success with the magnet only school model though

  17. Of course there are issues (as is to be expected) but this was a very solid job by the FHSAA. I think we will see some more lopsided scores (4A for instance, nobody will be able to go with Carol City) but on the whole, we have more equal classifications. 8A north got better, 7A south got better, 6A north got better, and 4A north got better. Excited for the upcoming season, hope everybody is back to work.

  18. The school is becoming an IB/magnet school. Therefore, they are reducing the size of the school and kids who can’t make the grades are being forced to go elsewhere. I have already seen the student demographics change.

  19. It was only seniors at the BCAA all star game. He is wrong. If they weren’t seniors and played it is not only against the rules, but messes with the kids eligibility.

  24. Deerfield might struggle in the state semis, but they have been gold when it comes to winning region titles. And with PB Central in the mix, the streak of second or third round losses for Vero might be safe. Wait a minute, that didn't come out right.

  25. You are right about Cypress Creek. I fixed in original post. Thanks!

  26. Great job! I think Cypress Creek may have always been in Region 2. Aside from that, everything seems right. Dade County lost a lot of 8A teams. I am a bit surprised Killian is no longer 8A.

  27. I have always been against expanding the playoff. I love how important each regular season game is. It makes every week like a playoff and that is part of what is great about college football. However, with how we have seen the same teams year in and year out for the most part I do believe something needs to change. 8 or even 16 would is probably what is best for college football. With 8 or 16, there would be early upsets and we would finally see some new matchups in semi finals and finals. If there was autobids, which Im sure is how they would do it, I would like to see some changes with the conference title games. Many times one side of the division is so much weaker, and a 7-5 team gets in. If that 7-5 team was to pull an upset, there is no way they should be allowed in the 8 team playoff. I think to prevent this, conferences should get rid of divisions, and take top 2 teams. Yes scheduling would be a new issue, but Id rather have imbalanced schedules than imbalanced divisions and a team like 7-5 pitt this year even having a chance at a playoff spot on last weekof regular season. And to people saying it would be too many games or they would miss too much school, fcs does it, so does div 2 and 3. If they can pull it off, fbs sure can. One last thing, I hate the nearly month off between last game and playoff game, it makes no sense. The playoff would prevent that as well.

  28. I think football will be ok. The game will continue to change and probably for the better

  29. Sadly, football's biggest problems are health related, not the nature of the playoff system or whether one even exists. The concussion repercussions are already affecting participation, particularly among the middle class and above. What makes this problem really serious is that there is no easy, viable solution. As a fan of the game, it has me concerned.

  30. It should expand to 16 teams and it should’ve expanded a long time ago. The ONLY equitable process for a true playoff system should remove as much opinion away from the game as possible. Every conference champion should have a seat at the table without question. Reduce the number of regular season games to accommodate an extended playoff schedule. Otherwise, why play

  31. Dang, I hate to come in here and start a fight with my second post, but maybe I just don't understand what's going on in Broward County. I always thought high school all-star games are just for seniors. For the very reason alluded to in the first post, it does not make sense to me to allow a current coach at one high school to be coaching kids from another high school who still have high school eligibility (how else would they end up on the Dillard sideline next year, unless they all plan to become coaches). I'm assuming at least a week of practice leading up to the game itself during which time the head coach (and perhaps members of his staff) would get one-on-one instructional/bonding time with kids from other schools? That's a recipe for disaster if you ask me. Of course kids are going to like the coach who only has to coach them for one week and where discipline likely is not an issue. What am I missing here?

  32. Eliminate 1 regular season game (solely to shrink how many potential games students play overall) Conference Championships on Thanksgiving Weekend Power 5 Champions, Best Group of 5 Champion, 2 Wildcards 2 weeks later, games played on home fields (or in Bowl cities in big cities that aren't Tier 1 games). Orlando, Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, San Diego come to mind or if you really want to help, put 2 quarterfinal games in 1 city. Massive influx of tourists from 4 teams. 2 weeks later, games played in Big Bowl Games (Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Rose, Jerry World, Peach) 1 week later, game played in one site.
