A win is a win. Can I quote you on that? But not if Lakeland does it with their superteam, right?

    Point Spreads

Putting point spreads on high school football games only encourages coaches to leave their starters in and run up the score on less talented schools. I would rather see both coaches agree to bring in second and third stringers when the game is lopsided in the 3rd or early 4th quarter. High school sports is supposed to be about the kids, not running up scores to please the fans or enhance the coach's resume. A win is a win; rubbing the other team's nose in it doesn't prove anything.

  7. Should be a good one! Madison is always tough in Boot Hill. Madison is not a legitimate 1A school though. They have another local high school that they can pull kids from. But the FHSAA let's them do it, so I don't blame them.

  8. I'm a bit of a homer when it comes to Manatee, so having some bit of restraint on my part when encountering other homers goes without saying. Just wondering how long its been since Lake city last won a state title?

    The Agenda Buster

I would like to add to this great post. If it is so important to your school to win state every year, why not hire the best coach you can. I'm not talking about the coach that encourages transfers but the one that builds teams from inside the program. Win it with what you teach.

  12. Too many classes! When all this started, we had 6 classes and FHSAA would divide the 2 smallest classes in half so we had 1a/1b and 2a/2b.

  13. If you take the top 6 classes and combine them Into 4 classes then each class would have 16 districts with no less than 6 teams in every single district and no more than 8. and only 2 will make the playoffs from each. Which means no 1-9, 2-8 and 3-7 garbage in the playoffs. And with that many district games, it would take a lot of stress out of scheduling and travel.

  14. Bishop Moore started the season with 4 very difficult match-ups going 1-3. They suffered with a very porous secondary on defense and a D-Line that tired in the 3rd quarter of each game. The Defensive Coordinator was playing most starters both ways and wasn't subbing them out. Their offense was able to put points on the board, but they couldn't match their high powered opponents. After their 4th game against Jones, changes were made to their secondary which led to improvements on defense, but the D-Line was still dragging in the 3rd quarter. They were able to put up big numbers in the first half of the South Sumter game, but had to hold on as South Sumter ran the ball successfully in the second half. In their last game against Tavares, they subbed more on the D-Line and instead of burning out in the 3rd quarter, the D-Line played well the entire game. I would expect BM to win this game at Harmony by 3-4 TD's if they continue to improve as shown in their last two games. They started 1-3, but should finish 7-3 and make a run for the playoffs in 5A.

  21. Best shot at an out of state win this week is Rockledge. I expect it to be a competitive game atleast. The Edgewater vs Marietta game is very interesting but Fla schools haven't done well in Ga this season. Mater Dei looks like the best team in the country hands down this season IMO. That St. Frances team is the real deal and MD had no trouble dispatching them. IMG/St. Frances will be interesting. I think the bulk of IMG's squad is underclassmen this season.

  22. Well then, our whole society must be ludicrous. It's because of a little thing called loyalty, which sometimes gets in the way of "playing the best players." All you bosses out there, tomorrow go into your workplace and announce you are demoting and promoting people based strictly on their level of talent, ignoring tenure, and see what anarchy prevails. And them imagine doing that every year. The real world does not work like this crazy little world of transferring we have going on right now. We have created an expectation in our young people that if you work hard you will "get the job." Well, we all know it's not that simple. Maybe that's why we are hearing stories of young people quitting jobs because they haven't been promoted within six months of starting, leaving disappointed. "Paying your dues" is very much a part of the real world, like it or not We like to blame the FHSAA for not doing its job, just as some like blaming the government for not doing its job. As coaches and supervisors, its all about taking personal responsibility for our decisions. Our jobs are not simply to play the best players. Anyone can do that. The truly masterful hs coach knows how to build a team and build character in his players. And understands how bumping a tenured player for that hot new transfer might be great for the short term, but disastrous for the long term. How many of you out there would like working for a boss with a track record like that, knowing you might get demoted next year so that energetic young intern can have your job? Do I sound crazy? Maybe so. But I say with the utmost confidence that some of our FL hs coaching legends of the past would not be waiting on the FHSAA to tell them what they can/should do or not do. These guys had a moral compass they followed. They made decisions based on what was the "right thing to do"...not necessarily what everyone else was doing.

If it looks like it, and it smells like it, doesn't mean you have to taste it to prove it's a turd. You can call it transfers, seeking opportunities, recruiting, etc, it isn't good for high school football if these teams are allowed to compete for state championships against schools that grow their own talent only to have it stolen away. The FHSAA isn't being a responsible organization with the best interests of high school athletics as a priority. It's kind of like the BS we hear all the time from NCAA with Power 5 and Group of 5 discrimination. Has anyone noticed how many Group of 5 teams have beaten the so-called superior teams of the Power 5 this year?
