So as We Know The Kick off classics is less then a 3 weeks away here. And every year we have the HAVES & THE HAVE NOTS.

now we know the usual HAVES are: St Thomas, Miami central, American Heritage, (Recently) Gibbons, Columbus, Chaminade, Miami Northwestern, (Last year) Miami norland Etc….

BUT let’s talk about some of the HAVE NOTS. What are some HAVE NOT teams that’s coming into 2024 that’s not expected to make a lot of noise but have the POTENTIAL To put the entire state on notice this year ??? , AND if they’re going to do so WHAT DO THEY HAVE TO DO IN ORDER FOR THAT TO HAPPEN??

For me some of my HAVE NOT teams out of broward coming into 2024 with potential in no particular order would be.

#1. Coconut creek- the cougars put the state on notice last year with a very competitive performance against one of the nations best in chaminade. The cougars continued that momentum finishing the season 8-2 but was held scoreless in the second round vs St Thomas Aquinas (28-0).

coming into this season the cougars have the studs on the roster but in order to make it far in a 5A where they again have to battle STA, MIRAMAR, ELY, & etc the cougars are going to have to be able to score against teams that carry elite defenses if they want to take that next step this season.

#2. Miramar -  the patriots are another team , GREAT DEFENSE but a questionable offense against teams with great defenses as well.

the patriots finished the regular season (6-4) last year with loses to Highlands out of Virginia, Dillard, Sta & western. But the patriots found their stride in the playoffs making it all the way to regional finals , losing a very close game to homestead.

coming into this season the patriots are going to have to be able to have a respectable offense wether it’s against a great defense or not if they want to take that next step. Their qb is nice with a great arm but if he’s getting shut down the patriots have to have another game plan in place to get his playmakers the ball or have a dam near unstoppable running game to keep points on the board.

Monarch- the knights had a hell of a season last year putting everyone on notice making it all the way to the STATE SEMIS vs Madarian at home put saw their defense give up over 50 to the mustangs.

if the knights want to get back to the very game and beyond in 2024 they have to stay healthy and they have to have different defensive strategies in place just in case the go to game plan isn’t working because you’re not giving up over 50 in the playoffs and making it very far let alone hosting the championship trophy.

Western- the wild cats finished the regular season 8-2 last year but if they finally want to make noise in the playoffs and not just the regular season every year their coaching staff have to figure out the Columbus/palmetto curse. Because every year it’s either Miami palmetto or Columbus that’s ending their season. Home or away. One year it was doral and they were heavy underdogs.

Dillard- the panthers had a very lack luster 2023 campaign according to their recent standards, going 6-4

with loses to - St Thomas, Chaminade, Cardinal Gibbons & Blanche ely. The panthers were 1 & Done in the playoffs with another loss to ely on the road.

the panthers last playoff run came in 2019 under first year head coach & friend Eddie Frazier who took the panthers to a (10-0) regular season and a run all the way to the regional finals where they met the juggernaut Miami central rockets who ultimately ended dillards Cinderella season.

If the panthers look to get back to their winning ways & making a run in this new district, they need to win the games their suppose to. & they have to be more dynamic offensively & they have to be able to have Great offensive & defensive line play. To many times the qb was running for his life and forcing prayer passes into double sometimes triple coverage because he had zero time to go through his reads which lead to many interceptions.

Penalties- I know high school Florida football is known for heavy undisciplined play and accumulating a lot of flags, false starts, encroachment, etc but my GOD ; Dillard we can’t get in the end zone if we’re going backwards every time We have positives on offense.

the panthers have a favorable playoff path atleast for the first time in a long time. Especially if we can get a high seed and the north side of the metro bracket come playoff time. So we have to take advantage and show the world the Dillard high football is here & we’re going to be a problem.

In Pinellas County you absolutely have to keep an eye on Tarpon Springs.  The had a number of D1 recruits transfer to them when Clearwater Academy International closed shop.  That in turn attracted many more recruits from various teams in the area.  They will make some serious noise this fall.  I think they are also no longer independent so they can make the playoffs?

Never heard of them. I’m assuming they’re in tarpon springs Florida ?? Where ever that maybe lol Hahaha. Sorry for my lack of knowledge about any schools that’s not in broward, dade, WPB, Orlando or Tampa.

but I have heard about the loads of transfers they got, not sure if they’re in metro or suburban but I’m going to most def be paying attention to them this upcoming season.

The “haven’t gotten there”, are many. Can’t put Monarch there, they were state semifinalist & have the 2cd most recruits in So Flo, behind NW.

Cocunut Creek, although it was only a spring game, looked real good on the DL, neutralizing a good Norland OL. Their offense looks mediocre, of course depending on the 14 recruits & their talent.
Stranahan has been more active than ever in the offseason. They’re def a have not but hoping to bust out of mediocrity.
Jones has been bridesmaid to Homestead the last 2 years by a hair. They have the team that could break thru this year.
Buchholtz has had a few great season but fall into the havenots in their eliminations.
Niceville is looking to rebound from early exits in the playoffs. A tougher regular season might help develop the character they are missing.
Naples are talented every year & boast 2 stud RB’s. Playing teams like Venice & AHP might prep them for that BIG WIN in the postseason.
Carol City is looking to resurrect from the dead with a busy recruiting off season. Being in 2a (huh?) will help.
Edgewater are perennial bridesmaids. They will be havenots till they notch The Big Win.

Other havenots that may be close: Deland, South Sumpter, Vanguard, Heritage, Rockledge, Columbia, Trinity Catholic…….

Interesting hearing stranahan having a busy off season transfers wise, haven’t heard anything about that.

interesting. We play them week 2 lol. Sound like should be a great game after years of being Dillards doormat every year.

As for monarch I have to see can they replicate what they did last year or will they be a one hit wonder.

their roster is full of talent and they showed that even in a loss to Dillard in the spring.

So with cedar grove (GA) on the schedule Peachridge (GA), on the schedule , along with coconut creek, Chaminade , STA, & coconut creek on the schedule we’re going to find out real quick & Soon if the knights are contenders or pretenders.

You should know of them….Dillard won a state championship by beating them in the State Championship game….way back when.

Remember in the spring game, all those recruits couldn’t play, so they’ll look different this fall……

I agree that this is the rule.  But why?  Should this rule be revisited now that kids can freely transfer from one school to another?   Is the spring practice/game really an extension of the fall season?  Why?

It probably will b revoted on by next year. I don’t know if extension is the right term. It does give a sample of the team’s upcoming season.

Technically, I think that's what the FHSAA always has called spring football, but I could be wrong.   I always thought that's how they justified not letting transfer students play in the spring (because they were not on the roster in the fall).  It really didn't make sense to me then and it doesn't make sense to me now.

Lake Mary strikes me as more of a "have not" historically. But the Rams were really good last year and will be good again. They have one of the best QBs in the state, picked up a good looking 6'5" WR from Mainland and open the season at  Cardinal Gibbons.

Hmmm interesting. I’m going to keep my eye on that game

We most def gonna see. How do you see them faring this fall with that schedule

Haven’t seen them play since 2 yrs ago. There have been teams that have loaded their schedule & didn’t turn out well. Trinity Catholic, in Ocala, had a loaded schedule & I believe went 3-7 (4-6?) 2 years ago. What saved them was they were in a weak district of 3 teams & made a good run in the playoffs. Monarch has Coconut Creek(I think) in their district & will need to win that game if they lay an egg with that schedule. That’ll b a game to attend!

Monarch is in the district with

Coral Springs

piper

Fort Lauderdale

so they should steam roll that district even tho piper improved last year under their new head coach so that maybe a game to keep a eye depend on what piper brings back.

With the schedule they have and the talent you say they have

what are the games you want to see them win to prove they’re elite ??

do you see them beating cedar grove or peach ridge ?

chaminade or Sta ? Because if they lose all 4 of those they are already at 4 loses.

with games against creek & ely remaining.

I don’t know anything bout Cedar Grove or Peachtree. Playing CM & STA early for any school could b an advantage because of all the new arrivals. Don’t know when Monarch plays them. I didn’t say they have talent! I don’t know any players on their team. I said they lead BC in transfers.

Yup looks like they are in 2A so the playoffs will definitely have them up against some tough competition

O ok thought you had some inside info on the knights lol hahaha.

but cedar grove and peach tree are GA powerhouses. Cedar grove is a small school like chaminade but they will legit play anyone anywhere , most time winning the game. They always play above their classification. They played Miami central at traz a few years back, gave them a tough battle the first half to so that game is gonna most def be a must see.

    • As a proponent of "like vs. like", I applaud the move by these schools.   But this represents a 1% net loss to the FHSAA of the 460 schools playing football (2 of the 7 already play in the SSAC).  So doubtful this even registers on the FHSAA's radar, as the loss of revenue is miniscule and new teams will be coming in.  I'm afraid it will take a loss of 10 times as many to get the FHSAA's attention and for them to ask the question, why?  Maybe this is the tipping point, and others will follow in significant numbers.  Or not.  Time will tell.
