Lakeland 50 Kathleen 0

Legion37

Recommended Posts

Lakeland started slow, but got the offense going in the 2nd quarter. Defense was stout again. Kathleen did all they could to bait Lakeland into retaliation penalties.

Lakeland is playing well heading into the playoffs. First time in a few years that they have continued to improve in all parts of the game throughout the season.

Week 11 is their bye week. Now they sit and wait to see how the points break down.

No so fast my friend, Lakeland was only up on Manatee only 29-14 with a couple of minutes left in the game, and Castle decided rather than just eat the clock and go home to keep the starters in and go for it and scored on a long play to make the final 36-14 score. You can call the Apopka game your closest from purely a score standpoint, but lets at least be real about Lakeland . They did not blow everyone else out................because that's simply not the case.. Castle left the starters in and instead of just running out the clock with just a couple of minutes left in the game. Manatee had begun to substitute freely on defense because the game basically was over, but Castle went for 1st down on a 4th down play in Manatee territory with 3 minutes left in the game and then scored the last TD on a Bowman 43 yard run with just about 2 minutes left in the game, to close out the game then 36-14. Game was much closer then the final score indicated.

Honestly the thing with Lakeland is that they really haven't been tested since Apopka back in week 3

What's going to happen when they have to dig deep against a more battle tested team in playoffs?

That's the biggest question with Lakeland right now

those kids get tested everyday in practice.  They get better competition in practice than they do in games.  The schedule won't be why they lose if they do

Getting tested in a practice setting and a game setting 2 different things

Besides the point I'm getting at is they won't cakewalk teams in the playoffs like they did in second half of the season

Blasting Bartow off the field is one thing

Won't be as easy to blast a plant or a viera or a Columbia off the field

That comes down to making sure the coaching staff has you prepared. Not another coach I’d rather have heading into the playoffs.

These kids are well aware of what happens if you are not prepared. Many of them are 4 year varsity players and have experience losing to Viera and both beating and losing to Plant.

Ive said it a million times....with Lakeland, it all comes down to discipline. Always has, always will.

same can be said for most teams

Experience is everything at the high school level.  This Lakeland team has a lot of it. That's why they have only allowed 50 points so far. That defense is for real!

Defense has not allowed a touchdown since Apopka (game 3). And that is with 2nds & 3rds playing the second half in most games. Only TD allowed during that time was a kickoff return.

Manatee was the only other team to score in double digits against Lakeland     I guess it depends on what definition of blowout is used.

You realize the combined record of the teams Lakeland has played since Apopka is 26-39, they've really loaded up the schedule with some power houses there to pad that stellar defense stats you want to promote so badly.....lets face it they beat what will be a 6-4 Manatee after this week and that hasnt beat a single team that will make the playoffs; An Apopka team that could also very easily end up 6-4 after the week and lost last week 35-0......yeap the same team that scored 20 points on that stellar Lakelend defense your touting, couldnt score a single point this past week? These are the teams that you want to  point to as statement games, that says Lakeland is a 2018 state title contender?

I was reiterating a statistic. Please tell me where I said that any of those games were "statement games" or that they made Lakeland "a 2018 state title contender"....

The years Lakeland won the state championship their strength of schedule was about the same as this year's.  Just something to think on.

Just off the cuff, I'd say STA were the only thing during that 2004-2006 run, that stood between Lakeland and a state title.

So basically the road to state is much tougher now than back then correct?  There's obviously more than 1 serious threat standing between lakeland and a state championship

And you base this on what, or should we just trust you and your opinion without you ever posting any merit based information? Just saying.......

Go back and look - during the regular season most of Lakeland's opponents were average.  Niceville was a one-loss team when they met up with Lakeland in the playoffs in 2005; Mainland was unbeaten when they played Lakeland in 2006

And both of those 2 teams have won exactly how many state titles dating back to 2004 to present

What is the relevance of that question? Mainland was an unbeaten team in the playoffs and Niceville a one-loss team.  Both arguably better than any of the previous teams Lakeland had face up to that point.
