I've heard Manatee has scheduled Miami Northwestern week 1. Does anyone on here have any insight on this? Manatee is fielding their best team in a decade and will likely meet Venice in the regional finals for a shot at the final four. This would be a thrilling game.

I am friends with one of Port Charlotte's assistant coaches and he disagrees with your comment about Manatee fielding their best team in a decade. He told me that Manatee’s starting QB transferred to Port Charlotte back in January. This is his reply to your comment: "Well their run/pass quarterback is in our weightroom. We smoked them last year." And I think he expects Port Charlotte to beat Manatee again this upcoming season. Also, he's very surprised that Manatee is going to play Miami Northwestern during Week 1 this upcoming season, because again their starting QB transferred to Port Charlotte.

He also said Port Charlotte called Venice and they asked to play y'all week one, but Venice said Port Charlotte would hurt their strength of schedule, so y'all said no.

I seriously disagree with this assessment. Manatee is bursting at the seams with talent. They are looking forward to one of their best defensive lines in school history with the return of edge rushers Tristan Titus and Max Freeman as well as one of the top DT prospects in the nation in Tyreek Robinson. 2 of their 3 linebackers return in  Alex Papale and Dante Mcdowell. Daron Jean returns at safety, and they return all 3 of their starting cornerbacks in Omari Evans, Rashid Phillips, and Christian Johnson. That's 9 of their 11 defensive starters back in the lineup.

Offensively, 3 of their linemen return and they have 2 dangerous receivers in Keyvon Reddick and Ramsey Cole. Tyron Jackson returns at runningback, and it appears that Manatee's coaching staff is going to give Elijah Perry the opportunity to run their offense. That's 7 offensive players returning from last season. The Canes have a very veteran squad returning in 2023. They think they can beat Venice and make the final four.  You will see how good Manatee is when the season starts in August. They're going to shock a lot of people.

Can't confirm NW playing Manatee, but I can confirm that Columbus will again play NW and Columbus is finalizing talks with Manatee as well for a preseason game. We already  had 2 OOS games fail to materialize: had a Georgia school drop us and a trip to Elder Cinncinati fell through a week ago, so I'm not gonna say this is 100% just yet.

Good to see Manatee back in the mix! Hope both Explorers and Bulls can make it happen over there on the West coast.

Manatee vs Columbus Week 0 is going to be a very interesting game. Explorer's offensive line vs Manatee's defensive line will tell the story. Don't sleep on the Hurricanes!

Oh, I'm not. We lose a lot on O-Line. Our offense may not average 35+pts a game like last season. However our D looks to be even better next year. I'm already predicting a very low scoring game week 0!

QB1 is still at Manatee

Then why did one of Port Charlotte's assistant coaches told me that Manatee’s starting QB transferred to Port Charlotte back in January?

There are even people at the FLA Varsity board discussing this: https://flavarsity.forums.rivals.com/threads/couple-of-charlotte-county-football-notes.10369/

And MaxPreps, Hudl, and Twitter shows that Johnny Squitieri transferred to Port Charlotte as well:

MaxPreps:

Hudl: https://www.hudl.com/profile/13654082/Johnny-Squitieri

Twitter:

So it appears Manatee’s starting QB did transferred to Port Charlotte, unless you don't consider Johnny Squitieri as Manatee’s starting QB from last season. But if Johnny Squitieri wasn't Manatee’s starting QB from last season, then why did one of Port Charlotte's assistant coaches told me that?

You are correct, Squitieri did transfer. A stupid move considering how good Manatee is about to be. Elijah Perry will play fine for them.

Wide receiver Jayce Barksdale is transferring from USJ in Tennessee to Venice for his senior season. Looks good on film and seems to be a good blocker. He should fit right in with our offense as Venice will be running the ball more than ever with the return of our entire offensive line, Alvin Johnson and Jamarice Wilder, Ashari Charles, Ryan Matulevich, Adam Paponotanikis, and now impact transfers Jayce Barksdale and Jaden Glasser.

I trust what people at Manatee have told me about their QB1.

And you have every right to believe what people at PC tell you.

    • Is Glades Central this year
    • Muckboy here!!! GC Raiders all day!!!! Let's go Raiders!!!!
    • My enthusiasm for the upcoming season is tempered by the reality that 95% of teams have no chance of winning a state championship.  I personally don't feel this is good for the long-term health of Florida high school football, but others may disagree.  I don't want to rehash the Metro-Suburban argument, but I foresee a large number of blowouts in the playoffs this year. Here in northwest Florida, a great season is when several teams make it to a Region final game.  In the current environment, the odds of a team from northwest Florida winning a state title are almost zero, maybe once in 10 years if the stars align perfectly.  So it is a matter of adjusting expectations and enjoying the spirit of high school football where it exists.  Yes, there are a handful of transfers in these parts, but generally there is a "community" feel to the competition.  Here, attendance is generally very good, rivalries are intense, the bands are robust, and the players play hard, even if they are not the most talented. I will be rooting for some underdogs across the state to make a run this year, but the reality is the usual suspects will likely dominate again.  Good luck to each of your teams!  One month until kickoff...
    • You right and I think coaching plays a part as well. You see Teddy Bridgewater is back at his high school Northwestern and they've gotten tons of transfers in
    • So, let's break this down.  Schools cannot control what their fans do, but schools can be punished if certain of their fans break the rules.  Is this fair?  I don't know.  But it is the way the rules are written.  If you start sending out text messages to kids suggesting they 'come play for Venice,' and you are not a representative of Venice's athletic interests, no one gets into trouble.  Although you may lose a few friends in Lakeland.   Can a kid who receives multiple text messages decide to selectively turn in certain teams, but not others?  Yes.  Does that happen?  Not in my experience.  To the contrary, kids/parents that have been a part of the shady underworld of high school recruiting/transferring tend to do whatever they can to stay quiet and under the radar for fear of getting caught in the punishment net.  As I have said many times (not necessarily on this site), most kids who get contacted by other schools take it as a compliment.  It makes them (and their parents) feel good.  "Dang, look at all these other schools/coaches that want me/my son to come play for them.  That's pretty cool. They're nice guys; why should I turn them in?"  And if the kid or his parents are the ones reaching out to other schools to gauge any interest that other schools might have, well, those are going to be the last kids/parents to want to turn anyone in.  With all due respect, it appears to me that you are trying to make the argument that the existing rules need to be changed.  That may be true.  But, as you have seen with NIL, once the camel gets his nose in the tent, the rest of the body is sure to follow.  Or you can go with the Pandora's Box analogy.   Either way, it'll get crazy.
