STA wins State Title #15

Aquinas was brilliant tonight.  The state championship game was played last week in Bradenton.  Aquinas took Manatee’s best shot and survived.  Manatee was better than Lakeland.  Even though Lakeland’s coaching staff struggled badly tonight they found ways to escape Tampa Bay Tech (who was a better team than Lakeland) and Niceville.  The truth was brought to the light tonight.

I am glad you didn't make the trip too. The game was not worth it.

There is certainly a side of me that would not have wanted to see either Lakeland or STA win a blowout game like the one last night.   Then, again, there's also a side of me that may have secretly enjoyed seeing either Lakeland or STA lose  a blowout game like the one last night.   B)

Lot of your comments said Lakeland had a bad night, or did they even show up!!!!! I tell who did show up, STA. And it’s Aquinas that gave em the bad night! That’s how football works. The same STA that won close games & didn’t look very good, just like Lakeland, showed up and beat down the dreads. Thats why Lakeland looked “bad!”

I feel exactly the same.

Sure. But, Lakeland has been uniquely, shockingly bad on offense all year. They masked it with a million big plays from Shanard Clower, who missed the last two games. But, there are things experienced viewers can see in what they try to do which makes them much worse than a merely impotent offense. They struggle -nearly every play it seems - to figure out who's in and who's out, and where they should line up. Perhaps no sequence betters sums up the awfulness than the one where Lakeland had 3rd and 2-3 in STA territory. They bring in a goalline/power package. They couldn't get lined up properly and took a 5-yard penalty. Crushing. What happened next? ANOTHER procedure/delay 5-yard penalty! So, 3rd and 2 became 3rd and 12. They proceed to leave the goalline personell on the field for 3rd and 12, hand it to the guy everyone knew was getting the ball, and gained like a yard. Punt. That is a historically awful sequence which falls ENTIRELY on coaching. Of course, that crap went on in varying forms all night, and all season. I do think Darter is correct in saying they regressed markedly from earlier in the season. Again, that's all coaching.

Lakeland must go outside the program and bring in a reputable OC. The current arrangement has not, and can not work And players know this, which means transfers will be harder to come by in the absence of the coaching overhaul.

Ok & unbelievably they were still undefeated. Had beaten 2 extremely talented teams in TBT & Niceville. Beat Miami Central. Torched BTW. Aquinas lost 3 games, had to score 10 points in a little more than a minute to go to overtime & got the win with their first lead of the game. Go to Manatee & are behind all game & pull out the win…..Does this look like a STA team of the past? Their talent was down & lost games in the 4th qtr. We’re down 14-0 & 20-0 in back to back games in the playoffs……..Hell with all your garbage above you were still ranked in the nation & the best team in Florida! Quit your excuses for the loss. Wow

Those were not "excuses". They were reasons. The only reason they won those games was because of scores provided or set up by defense and special teams, and big plays by Clower. The offense- scheme, play-calling and player development- was bad all season. And, even at that, the offense regressed as the season went along. Not sure how saying "we were bad" is seen as "making excuses".

Because “we were bad” gives no recognition of the team you played, which made you play bad. Hence your D ,giving  up 34 points, which you just applauded above. Nuff here. No more to say……It’s tough being undefeated then losing by so much.

You sound like the people out of Jacksonville from Raines. Oh Northwestern isn't that good and the referees were cheating. Like really Vikings. The fact of the matter is you got your ass beat lol. Yes you went undefeated but just came across a better team that night.

    • As I understand it, a school doesn't have to give up FHSAA membership to join SSAA. The FHSAA views SSAA schools as independents. SSAA conducts it's own post season tournaments,  awards its own championships and has a separate set of by-laws.
    • There has been talk amongst Desoto and Hardee about this recently.  It has the SSAA written all over it.  The few athletic directors I’ve spoken to that have moved over to the SSAA are pretty pleased with their decisions. Not sure what to say about the state’s oldest rivalry leaving the FHSAA.
    • I've been told that Hardee has applied to join SSAA and can only assume the others have as well. Frostproof & Labelle are already SSAA members.  Play won't begin until 2026. Honestly I would not be surprised if more schools don't follow suit.   Here's the article: SEVEN FLORIDA SCHOOLS TO FORM HEARTLAND CONFERENCE By DOUG DONNELLY Seven high school football programs in central and southwest Florida have announced the formation of a new athletic conference, the Heartland Conference, set to begin competition in 2026. The conference will consist of DeSoto County High School, Frostproof High School, LaBelle High School, Lake Placid High School, Lemon Bay High School, Hardee High School, and Avon Park High School. Organizers say the similar-size schools are joining together with a mission to advocate for Florida High School Athletic Association rules for the greater good of the development of student athletes. Consistent scheduling, natural rivalries and geographic proximity are benefits of the conference. Play will begin in the 2026-27 scheduling cycle so that schools can honor current contracts. “The rebirth of the Heartland Conference will be exciting for communities, fans, players, and coaches,” said DeSoto County High School coach Clifford Lohrey. “The opportunity to create stability in the continuously changing world of high school athletics is important for rivalries that are heading toward extinction. The chance to have both conference and district play in our schedule is important in creating an environment where every game matters.” Jason Mensing, head coach at Lemon Bay, echoed those sentiments, adding that the schools share a common philosophy. “The Heartland Conference will provide our student-athletes with consistent, high-quality competition against schools with similar demographics and geographic proximity,” Mensing said. “This will also create more opportunities for local rivalries and enhance the overall experience for our players, coaches, and fans.” The conference aims to create a more level playing field for each member school, fostering closer and more exciting contests. Despite some additional travel, schools fit a common footprint with similar enrollments in addition to being in geographical locations that limits rapid shifts in student movement. “Frostproof is very excited to rekindle an old relationship that creates a competitive excitement and experience for our kids,” said Richard Marsh, Frostproof coach. Lake Placid head coach Jay Del Castillo said his district is enthusiastic about the future of the Heartland Conference and the positive impact it will have on their football programs. “How exciting it is to get like-minded coaches together for a common goal of benefiting the kids,” Castillo said. “Not only will this give them a chance to compete against their fellow friends, but it gives them another chance to be seen and honored for their hard work throughout the season.” Guidelines for the awarding of trophies and post-season honors are being drafted now. “Avon Park is excited for the return of the Heartland Conference,” said coach Lee Albritton. “All of the coaches and programs that are joining have similar mindsets and goals for our programs and doing things certain ways. We look forward to competing with all of these program’s year in and year out for the Heartland Conference championship.” For more information on the Heartland Conference, contact Jason Mensing, Heartland Conference president.
    • I'm getting this info from Sun Sports feed (SW FL news) on facebook but I can't find any official online news stories yet about.  The article named Lemon Bay, DeSoto, Frostproof, Lake Placid, Hardee, LaBelle and Avon Park as founding members.  It is an alliance of like-sized programs that want stability and a level playing field. I suppose they weren't interested in the SSAA which seems to have the same goal?
