  • Won over 200 FL hs football games
  • Coached at one school for over 25 years
  • Led his team to 14 playoff appearances spanning 4 decades
  • Led his team to back-to-back state title game appearances
  • Has a stadium named after him

Al Morrell - Clewiston?

Al Morrell is a GREAT guess, but just misses the mark.

Won 200+ games-check.

Coached exactly 25 years at Clewiston...not over.

Led Clewiston to 16 playoff appearances spanning 4 decades.

Led Clewiston to back-to-back state title game appearances-check.

Al Morrell Stadium...where?

Was this coach ONLY a head coach at one school during his career, or was he a head coach at more than one school?

While this has nothing to do with the current topic, I wish the FHSAA would update the record books. I think it a shame that the football book has not been updated since  2015. The book made it easier to look at success overtime, shame the FHSAA has given up on it.

With only 14 playoff appearances, I'm lead to believe that he spent much of his coaching career when only district champs made the playoffs.

My first thought was Billy Turner (Hillsborough/Chamberlain), but I think he only made it to the big dance once.

All of the others that I can think of who have a stadium named after them won at least one state title.  And based on the way the question is worded, it leads me to believe the coach in question made it to the title game twice in a row, but came up short both times.

Hmmm, may have to do a little digging.

I was thinking Billy Turner as well but he only got to the finals once. Then I figured it would be Jim Powell (Venice) but he didn't quite have 200 wins.

Or have back-to-back title games (best I can tell).

Somebody mentioned in a previous thread; Gene Cox.

He meets all of the criteria except one.  His Leon teams appeared in playoff games over three decades, not four.

Hmm, Cox had more than 2 title game appearances and the only time he appeared in back-to-back title games, he won one ('74) and lost one ('75).   This adds a new wrinkle.  He may have had multiple title appearances and may have won one or more titles, but only appeared back-to-back once.   At least that's how I'm interpreting the responses to the selections.

    • It is not Estero.  Please reread the background information above.  Joe Hampton took over the Estero program in 1988 and won his first playoff game 10 years later, not 3 years.

    • Interestingly, if you listened in on the FHSAA Fall Sports Task Force zoom call the other day, the FHSAA seems to be inclined to punt on any and all health issues.  While that may be a smart legal position to take, and while there may be some merit in leaving Covid-related decisions in the hands of the local health officials, the end result is going to be an inconsistent set of rules and policies.   Personally, I think the FHSAA needs to take a more vocal role in setting up some basic standards on big-ticket issues, such as:  (1) will fans be allowed at games (if so, under what circumstances)?; (2) what should/must a school do if one of their kids tests positive?    I threw out a bunch of questions in a prior post; I'm not saying that all of these questions have to be answered the same for every school in the state, but there needs to be some guidance and consensus on the major ones.
    • Hornet you are correct that Seminole County has started back however there are at least two schools of the 8 in the county that had to shut down work outs due to a Covid case.    Kids and coaches will contract Covid during the season, the question is how do we handle it at the high school level?  Do we shut down the program for a week, two weeks, etc...or do we sit the kid or coach who is sick?  We need a statewide policy as to how this will work.  ALL schools should treat a positive case in each sport the same.  We all know public schools can not afford to test each kid each week or even twice a season.  What if we do it the old Pop Warner days like weight check, each team must have a book and a medical professional (Dr and/or ATC) must check each athlete daily or at a minimum before each contest for temperature, and signs of sickness.
    • That's Awesome, Congrats Coach Sammy! Ft Myers is a great program and the pair of them built it. Charlotte's oldest and most respected rival since 1926. Ironic that Sammy and Binky played over each other for their respectve schools and ended up in a long coaching career against each other. Such great legendary games, and I can't imagine another rivalry in the state that has had as many last minute turnarounds (or double OT in a  Regional Final) as this series.   And you got to see  a half dozen as the Ball Boy!
