Are mid season transfers eligible to play?

Palm Beach Central, SR, Waden Charles (Arkansas commit) transfers to Somerset Canyons this week. Will he be eligible to play the remainder of the season? Moore Haven had a QB transfer after week 3, a few seasons ago and was allowed to play. Is this a new thing now, because I dont think this has ever happened in Palm Beach County

I want to say it's a certain number of weeks into the season. It's new to me honestly because Rockledge had a player transfer to Sebastian River after the KOC and he was able to play the full season

If he hasn't played yet, he is immediately eligible.

If he has played, he is ineligible to play unless he's:

1. A dependent of active-duty military personnel whose move resulted from military orders.

2. A child who has been relocated due to a foster care placement in a different school zone

3. A child who moves due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation or divorce, or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent.

4. Authorized for good cause in district, private or charter school board policy.

 

So, it really depends on what the new school/district considers to be a good cause move.

He’s played in all 3 regular season games and the 1 preseason game

#4 seems to be the card played most every time, with close to 100% success.

There have been quite a few midseason transfers who've been able to play right away. Of course, we don't hear about the vast majority of them, unless we follow certain groups on social media, which often disclose such moves.

Broward has had several names transfer after week 2. No rules apply anymore to that stuff.  Rumor is Chaminade has had a few leave. Don't know how true, but I heard 6-7 guys.  QB Zak Katz has gone back to True North and Rumor is that Jabari Brady has left as well as 2 of the bigger names.  I am sure some have legit reason, but some of these guys were the alphas at their last school and just can't take either waiting their turn again or in terms of recievers being in a rotation with a bunch of other number 1s.

This right here is the biggest joke.  The FHSAA should determine if it's good cause not the county or private school who obviously wants the kid to play.

 

I'll give an example.  We had a basketball player that lived in our zone but her mom worked at another school 20 minutes away so the girl rode with her mom to school and played there.  The season had started, it was very early in the season, and then mom lost her job so the mom wanted the daughter to attend our school because that was the school she was zoned for and she wouldn't have to drive 20 minutes to school and mom had no way to take her there anymore.  The county denied good cause so the girl transferred to a private school even further away and they gave her good cause.

Or as I have heard stories of, that cuts both ways.  We have had a very good player wanting to transfer to our school for a couple of years (direct info from his Dad) and the county has prevented it.   No doubt politics also plays a role within the district and our HC has been crystal clear he only wants kids that WANT to be here so no issues with those leaving our school.  I think BadBird just gave another good example of this practice.

Yeah that #4 rule is very ambiguous and too open to interpretation/abuse.

As with most policies in public education, the rule isn’t there because it’s a best practice. It’s there to prevent litigation.
