A bit confused here. Are district champions given 1-4 seeds or just an at large bid according to their ranking?

Are the State semifinals still seeded 1-4 according to their rankings?
thanks

Per the FHSAA Football Sports Manual:

4.7.2.2.1 Regional Tournaments
1A-7A
(a) Playoff field will be made up of 32 teams in each class.
(b) 8 Qualifiers in each region. 4 District champions and 4 at large qualifiers. Teams will be seeded 1-8 based on the final FHSAA MaxPreps Rankings.
(c) Higher seed will always host in regional tournament except during the regional quarterfinal round where a district champion is facing an at-large team, the district champion is designated as the host regardless of seeding. Determination of a host school using these criteria is not absolute. In all cases, the FHSAA Office reserves the right to select an alternate site.

So, to answer your question, it looks like the 8 teams in each Region get seeded based on MaxPreps ranking.  Higher seed hosts unless an at-large team (i.e., a non-district champ) is playing a district champ in the opening round.  In that case, even if the at-large team is seeded higher, they travel and the lower-seeded district champ hosts.  After the first round, higher seed hosts regardless.

Here (among other places) is where a team can get screwed:  Say the top two seeds are both district champs, but the 3 seed is an at-large team.  Then assume seeds 4 and 5 are the other two district champs.  1 plays 8 (with 1 hosting), 2 plays 7 (with 2 hosting), 3 plays 6 (with 3 hosting, because this is a game between two at-large teams and 3 is the higher seed) and 4 plays 5 in a battle of district champs.  But despite winning their district, 5 has to travel because, according to some formula that no one knows or understands, 4 is ranked slightly higher than 5.

I strongly believe that district champs should get the top four seeds and at large teams should get the next four spots.  Will that result in games between district champs and "better" at-large teams?  Absolutely.   But, in my opinion, home field advantage should be awarded to teams that win their district until they play another higher-ranked district champ.

Definitely agree that all 4 district champs should be guaranteed to host the first round of the playoffs as it is sometimes hard to reconcile the rankings (seeding for playoffs) and how they arrive at them.  Example in 6A where we reside, we dropped (-4) spots after our last win and looking at the data in the site for strictly 6A in MaxPreps they have Southridge as the 6th overall seed with an 8-2 record and 24.3 SOS.  Whereas they have us as the #10 overall seed in 6A with the identical 8-2 record but a stronger (25.2) SOS according to their logarithms.  Simply raises suspicions when there is no transparency which ultimately leads to conspiracy theories.  No one wants that.

That is the problem I have with the current system. Because there's no transparency, it leaves the door open for the FSHAA to favor one team over another in close situations without the mis-ranking being obvious. Even if you are a math genius, you can't know for sure if you have been hosed when the methodology is not revealed as there is no way to double check their math.

Check out brevard sports network. Apparently they somewhat figured it out along with the percentages they use for each category

How do they conclude that they are right? Have they reperformed a statistically appropriate sample and obtained the same results as the FSHAA rankings?

If they have, BSN should make their findings publicly available so that everyone can do the calculations themselves.

Is there anyway anyone can do a 1-7a playoff projection breakdown as of this past weekend?

Unless someone has correctly figured out the formula,I don't think anyone can create an accurate projection until the new rankings come out this week.

If the current rankings stay the same, this scenario will play out when #4 Vero Beach will host #5 Lake Nona despite both being district champions.

Yes, and I would expect them out this Tuesday.  This week's games must be played by Thursday,  and the FHSAA will release the playoff brackets on Saturday, the 9th.

So, basically, all the "Friday night games" will be played on Thursday night this week, right?

And will the playoffs start Friday, 11/15?

That’s what it looks like because all the games have to be played before Friday. So they can do what they have to do to have the final seedings and first round playoff matchups out by Saturday.

From what I've seen during their playoff prediction segments they've been pretty accurate and stated how they found their results. it's not 100% accurate since they said it is still off slightly but it seems pretty close

The fact theirs is still off slightly may be indicative of the FHSAA having "errors or omissions" in their own calculations.

    • Nolebull, You are making a good argument for what the rule ought to be or why the rule ought to be changed.   I'm telling you what the rule is.  Interestingly, I witnessed first hand the FHSAA deal with a case that was very similar to the (presumably, hypothetical) one you just described.  A family provided a kid with a bed for the night because that kid had an unfortunate family situation that would have left him homeless for the night had a teammate's family not stepped up and given him a place to stay for the night.  Yep, you got it, impermissible benefit.  Coach and school penalized.  The difficulty is coming up with rules that can't be taken advantage of.  Where do you draw the line?   If paying for an Uber is OK, why can't you just buy the kid a car instead?  More convenient for all parties.  If you can buy a kid a meal, why can't you take his family grocery shopping and let them stock up?  Or, better yet, just give then a gift card and let them spend the money as they please.  What do you do when one school offers up a $1,000 gift card, but another school is willing to give the kid a $2,000 gift card?  Do we really want to turn high school sports into professional sports?
    • Some kids NEED to transfer to get in the best position to change the trajectory of their entire life. Could literally save their life. Difference between going to college and being stuck in your neighborhood getting lost to streets.    And I can only speak for myself, but I’m more interested in a at-risk kid changing his situation for the better in hopes of saving his life than your favorite high school team losing a game because he transferred from your favorite school.
    • I wouldn’t be so critical of the FHSAA if they didn’t lie and say they give 2 craps about student athletes. I wish people would just be honest. But I guess if they were honest, it would mess up their hustle.
    • Wait are you saying there is a rule that bars an adult mentor who coaches young men a sport from helping a struggling student athlete and his family with transportation? Whoa that’s next level crazy.    “Hey coach I’m on the side of the road and almost got hit. I’m miles from school and it’s 110 degrees out. Can you get me a ride?” ”Sorry. Some turds 6 hours away in Gainesville said I can’t. Hope you don’t get hit or pass out.”
    • Say what you want, justify it however you want, wish the rules weren't what they are, but there is no question that a coach or other school representative paying for Uber rides for kids playing sports is a violation of the existing FHSAA rules.  Period.  And Teddy Bridgewater may be or have been an elite athlete, may be or become an excellent high school football coach, and/or may have his heart in the right place, but tweeting out a message to the world that you have done something that undoubtedly constitutes a violation of the rules is just plain stupid.
