Congratulations to players and coaches from these teams for their success.

Zephyrhills(5A) just beat Lake Gibson and also has a win over Wiregrass Ranch, so that is wins over 2 playoff teams from last year.  And they were comfortable wins..that is where the surprise comes in.  The Bulldogs nearly made the regional finals last year.

Crystal River(5A) has won 3 games all by one TD or less and its offense has put up 100 points.

Fort Lauderdale(7A) has outscored its first 3 opponents 58-7.

George Jenkins(8A) has outscored its first 3 opponents 118-13.

Hialeah Gardens(8A) is a team that not too long ago went several seasons without a single win.

Nice to see Jenkins winning. It helps Lakeland out points-wise. But, it will be interesting to see how they do against a little tougher competition. So far they have played Mulberry, Bartow & Lake Region. They have a quality coach, but they have to start scheduling a bit tougher to go anywhere. Those teams are not going to prepare them for going up against Lakeland and Osceola.

I think the point of the thread is surprising teams off to a 3-0 start, Vero has started 3-0 since 2011, and rarely lose early in the year, playoffs are a different story. Was a surprise to see them win openers at Oscar Smith in Virginia last season and at Venice  this year though.

Well it was still surprising we all thought Venice would win that game, Even some Vero Beach fans had their doubts

5A Menendez is off to a 3-0 start, which included a 62-38 victory over St Augustine.  For some perspective on that victory....

Prior to this year, Menendez was 0-17 versus the Yellow Jackets in the series.  Menendez lost its last 14 games to St Augustine by a combined score of 613-71.  That is an average score of 44-5.  7 of those games were shutouts.  Only twice did Menendez get within 21 points of St Augustine.   The 62 points Menendez scored was the most scored against a Yellow Jackets team in 89 years.

In that Falcons win, Kenny Logan and Tye Edwards combined for nearly 300 rushing yards.  In 3 games, Logan has rushed for 353 yards and scored 8 TD's.  Edwards has rushed for 472 yards and scored 10 TD's.

This is what I wrote earlier in the season...

Menendez(5A)-The Falcons were 8-4 last year and played Baker County and Clay tough.  Kenny Logan, a 3-star athlete who played RB and WR last year, is a big-time playmaker with multiple power 5 offers.  Tye Edwards is one of the top linebackers in the state with numerous Power 5 offers.  New coach Kyle Skipper has been the OC, so they should not lose continuity.

Menendez travels to Baker County (2-1) tomorrow in what could be a close game.  Update:  Menendez lost 48-21.  Edwards finished with 17 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Logan ran 17 times for 81 yards and a touchdown.

Not fully on thread here but, Space Coast HS,  first 3-0 start since 2005.

2017 were 3-7.

2016 were 2-8.

2015 were 5-4.

2014 -2013

2012 were 1-8.

2011 were 3-6.

2010 were 5-6.

2009 were 3-8.

Space Coast definitely improved, lots of Astronaut High transfers. Doubt that will hold up to a strong Rockledge team this week. Raiders have the best player in Brevard County, Ladarius Tennison, a hard running RB and flies all over the field on Defense.

It’s not the same Ridge team from 2-3 years ago, but this is a good win for GJ. I don’t see them competing with Osceola, but it could help them get into a playoff spot. Lakeland and GJ should both head into the 10/5 matchup undefeated. Should provide some intrigue for the rivalry.

The gig is up for 4A Labelle and 5A Crystal River, who each lost their first games after surprising 4-0 starts.  Crystal River lost a tough OT game to Nature Coast.

...some teams that kept their surprising starts going:

6A Golden Gate beat East Lee County 44-7 to go 5-0.

7A Riverdale beat Ida Baker 35-0 to go 5-0.

8A George Jenkins was idle and is still 4-0.

yes James Delgado.  He graduated in 2003 played for Webber.  Coached at Webber, Osceola then at Apopka.  Really good coach and person.  Glad he is doing well

A pretty vocal guy if I remember him well. When he went to that team, i though he was going to have a rough time. But I guess he is making it work.

Good for him!
