    RPI frustrations

I really like the RPI. It’s the best method the FHSSA has ever used to help determine the “strongest” teams within each classification. There will be detractors and whiners with every selection process (See At-Large teams in the NCAA basketball tournament). But the FHSAA is light years ahead of where they’ve been when it comes to creating a more competitive playoff field. The only other major change that would help ensure we have the absolute best state tournament, would be to shrink the number of classifications but we all know that might take some doing. So from a spectator’s perspective, Kudos FHSAA for taking this important leap.

  2. I remember back in the day you can be 9-1 and miss the playoffs because the one loss you had was against a 10-0 team. That was before that everybody gets a trophy nonsense. Pretty hypocritical that you need five wins to go and play in an exhibition bowl game but you’re allowed in the playoffs with two and three wins. If people are begging for change every single year than you know something is systematically wrong

    Selection Show

There will be no selection show. Brackets will start to drop at 7 AM ET on Sunday Morning. I will be up early to be ready to handle all of this for you all to read.

    Is 4A-R3 the Weakest?

I was about to say this same thing on the other thread with losing teams making the playoffs. In 1A-4A 24 teams make the playoffs out of 32-40 teams. Over half the teams make the playoffs. We need more teams in each class, which means we need less classes

  5. Terrible. A stain on the FHSAA. This ha gone too far. They need to consolidate the classes. We only need 5 realistically. 6 would be better. 8 is insane. We only have like 500 teams playing for the playoffs. 500 divided by 6 is 83. 83 divided by 16 districts in each class is 5-6 teams per district. What the hell is wrong with that?

  6. PLANT... called it when they were 0-6. WP should be weighted 50% instead of 35%. OOWP should be weighted lower. All hover near .500.

  7. In 1996, playing for Frostproof High, Travis Henry rushed for 4087 yards and 34 TD's , averaging 11.3 yards per carry. In the 3A state title game in Daytona Beach, Henry rushed for a state title game record 328 yards. That effort enabled him to break a 43 year-old national record for the most rushing yards in a season. Unfortunately, it was not enough, and Frostproof lost the title game to two-time defending state champion Union County. That season, he shattered the state single-season rushing record of 2,969 yards set by University Christian's Willie McClendon in 1987. He rushed for 14 straight 200-yard games and finished with 19 in all. Henry finished his hs career with 7,221 rushing yards and 79 touchdowns. Henry played 4 years at Tennessee, rushing for 3,078 yards. He made the All-SEC team in 2000, his senior year. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills, where he became one of the Bills' all-time leading rushers. Henry played for 7 seasons in the NFL, where he rushed for about 6,000 career yards. Playing for Tennessee in a game that featured one of the most improbable endings in NCAA history, Travis Henry(#20) took over at the end of the game and scored the winning touchdown. The fun starts at about 4:00, when everyone thought the game was over. The article below discusses the game. http://knoxblogs.com/volhistorian/2007/11/14/the_stoerner_stumble/

    RPI frustrations

In defense of the FHSAA (despite being an RPI critic), my numbers have consistently lined up with the FHSAAs. But when I do make mistakes, it would be easier if all schools' data was available instead of wondering where my mistake is. For example, my rankings would have been very off if someone on here had not posted about Glades Central forfeiting games. I know they aren't including the FHSAA Independent class, but it would be nice if they did as a lot of the winning percentages, opponent's winning percentage are coming from that group. They did. The name of the school was Bishop Sycamore, but I guess they have now changed their name to Youthbuild.

  9. But they did beat Wharton. Nole, I understand the frustration and your argument. And I understand why you might want to make Plant the poster child for why the system is broke (in its first year) and why it needs to be fixed. All that said, do me a quick favor and go find the team in 8A Region 2 that, in your opinion, is more deserving and would likely beat Plant in a head-to-head match-up now (not earlier in the season). Someone's gotta fill that 8th seed spot.

  10. They had someone set from Freedom Bowl but it got dropped if i remember correctly

  11. I feel your pain. I would like to see the current system tweaked a little: do away with (or significantly de-emphasize) the OOWP and give more weight to each team's own record (maybe a 50/40/10 breakdown).

  12. Umm I for one couldnt name all last years champions...I mean records stand until broken over numerous years

  13. I agree, just like last year's point system. A win should be worth more than a loss. The reason district runner-ups automatically qualified was because districts use to be large and winning teams were being left out. Then by going to smaller districts, losing teams were making the playoffs and some teams with winning seasons still got left out. These point systems and rpi systems were suppose to cure that. They have not! How bad did Plant lose some of those games? I don't care how hard the schedule is, if you are getting beat bad, you got no business making the playoffs! Doesn't prove you are more deserving than a winning team with an easier schedule. To me, its like taking a student that would struggle with basic math, putting them in advance calculus, then saying their F is better than the student who got an A in basic math.

  14. Before too many people get bent out of shape about a (possibly) 4-6 Plant team making the playoffs, remember two things: 1. Based on OWP, they've played the second toughest schedule in the state (behind Carol City). 2. They went 3-1 in their district, finishing second, and for many years, would have made the playoffs as the district runner-up.

  16. Look IDC who we beat in the regular season no more, nobody is gonna remember us doing this shit but they'll remember who the state champs are.....
    1 point
  17. Well if you beat them then all will be right with the world! You would think being undefeated would give a team a boost. But frankly we will play them wherever they are, assuming we both get that far.

  20. Glades Central did not play in a state final when Fred Taylor was there. Nice try, though.

  21. Districts are gone only because those schools were scared and tired of being in a district with BTW, cocoa, TCA, NFC, UC, Madison County, ect. Blame the schools for being scared of competition

In my opinion, this is a good day for athletes, especially in a sport like football where careers can be very short indeed!

  25. No, that's not a typo fellas. Due to an ineligible player, Glades Central has lost the games they've won. Unless they win their appeal, Glades Central will walk into Muck Bowl 0-9. As a diehard Raider fan, It pains me to say it.
