Coaching changes

John Carroll has hired Vero Beach assistant Mickey Groody, who will also start serving as the school's AD next academic year.

The 29 year old is an Aquinas alum and was an All-American punter at FAU.

In six seasons at Vero, he coached special teams and RBs. Was the freshman HC for three years and is the flag football HC.

@FloTech - what are your thoughts on this?

Groody is an excellent coach, he should do well there, being an STA alum he knows the culture expected at a private Catholic school like John Carroll.

John Carroll/Vero have had ties for a while as Coach J previously coached there and they have mined the Vero staff previously for their head coach search.

Is there normally this much activity with coaches departing and coming in Florida schools? If the activity is more this year than in the past what do you feel is the reason for it? Are the coaches getting just like the players, moving all over the place on a whim?

the pay sucks and its not a factor til you see georgia, south carolina, some of alabama and texas coaches making 100k a year and dont teach, much if any.

the admin is either focused on band and the fine arts and dont care about athletics so there is no support....

or

the admin is overly focused on athletics/football and after 2 years they want a new coach because you didnt win enough.

and

the admin changes every 2 or 3 years, new principal/ad that didnt hire the fb coach and his staff wants his own people in there....

the days of staying at 1 spot for 10-15-20 years are over.  partly because of the admin moving around so much, the other part coaches are scared to death to stay very long for those above reasons.  better to quit a job than get fired.  sometimes.

my thoughts.

At least 20% HC turnover each off-season in Florida

Normally, when the HC goes, do some or all of the assistants also leave? I imagine that the assistants leaving may in many cases be a bigger loss than the HC. Since I'm of the opinion that 80% of the success of a team is the coaching and not the players, losing a HC and let's say a bang up DC could cripple a team that depends a great deal on defense.

Reggie Crume has been hired to be the new Clearwater Calvary Christian head football coach.  Coach Crume has had success in his previous stints at Tampa Alonso and Palm Harbor University.   The cubbard is pretty bare at Calvary, but if anybody can turn a program around it's Coach Crume.

Dedrick Bell's prior head coaching experience - three years at Marengo Alabama, a 1A school with a HS enrollment of about 80: (2011, 3-7; 2012, 0-11, 2013, 6-6.

I have no doubt he was the most qualified candidate. LOLOLOLOL

...a related article.  He also was head coach at another Alabama high school 10-15 years ago.

Sometimes we have to look at the big picture.  Even if they could get the hs coach with the best record in FL to come there, it might not be in the best interest of the program if that coach turns around and leaves in 2-3 years.   IMO they need someone who is going to stay there for 5+ years and build a foundation for the future.
