Last year, a winless Gadsden team made the playoffs.  Could another team with a bad record make the playoffs this year?  Here are some front runners for the honor, based on current RPI ranking:

4A-R1   #6 seed Bradford is 1-4

4A-R3   #7 seed Lemon Bay is 0-7

3A-R2    #6 seed First Academy is 1-4

1A-R4     #7 seed Pahokee is 1-4

Probably but that's what happens when you got regions ranging from 9-12 teams

Solution

MAKE 1A 2 REGIONS INSTEAD OF 4

I can't believe fhsaa didn't even consider combining the regions in smaller classes to fix this issue

Pahokee is not getting in.  They maybe go 2-2 over the next 4 and that is a big time maybe.  I said it at the beginning of the season that Pahokee was going to have the same thing happen to them that happened to BTW (Miami) a couple of seasons ago. The schedule is too tough and you lose one too many games.

Pahokee barley beat a very bad Dwyer team

They may not even be a top 6 team in that region this year schedule or not

Maybe 1a is all trash except for Madison county. Madison is on Columbia level. Madison JV needs a playoff spot.

Well Madison lost by 11 after Columbia turned ball over 3 times

I wouldn't say on Columbia level but Madison is definitely tiers better than the rest of 1a

Yeah, for real I think Madison JV could make a run. They beat Columbia JV.

If Cocoa was in 1A, I’m sure they would dominate also...Just saying.

Yes they would score 50 a game. Madison be scoring 50 and 60 all day. I don't like most them sorry 1a schools. Very embarrassing to be in Florida of all states.

Better chance Pahokee is the best team in that region than not one of the top 6.

Trust me the fans could play In 1a. JV teams would kill them.i watch 1a games all the time. Horrible it's like watching people with no skills play. It's a joke of a class in Florida.

A 5-4 or 4-5 Mainland will be a #4 seed. Time for some changes.....hurtfully, just saying

Wouldn't they have hosted a first round game under any system as a district champion? I mean the original system of district winner/runner-up they still are hosting a first round game and maybe a 2nd depending on the year. So how is this system different? Now, if a 5-4 Mainland team gets in the playoffs as a #8 seed then you might have a better example of why this system isn't better.

Simple

There is actually seeding

Old system "seeding" had 9-1 Columbia below 4-6 Lincoln when columbia had beaten Lincoln at their place already that season

Seeding is needed!

My bad, for not explaining myself. I wasn't questioning the current playoff formula (although I agree the format needs tweaking at the least). Just the fact that in an extremely weak district, Mainland (my heart and soul) still earns a top four position in a region with a very poor season under way. Only Lakeland High, of all public Florida high schools, has been to the FHSAA playoffs in more consecutive current seasons. Lakeland 26 yrs, Mainland 25 yrs in a row. My call for "change" was sadly in house , not state wide....Buc Forever

Mainland is not that bad of a team. I could see them winning 1 or 2 games in the playoffs.

We did but that should have been a home game for us

Those playoff games are only good crowd numbers we get and that money helps Columbia with keeping up with much financially stronger programs

That extra playoff game cost us several grand since we would have gotten much bigger crowd in lake City then Lincoln who didn't even look to bring 1k to a home playoff game

    • Nolebull, You are making a good argument for what the rule ought to be or why the rule ought to be changed.   I'm telling you what the rule is.  Interestingly, I witnessed first hand the FHSAA deal with a case that was very similar to the (presumably, hypothetical) one you just described.  A family provided a kid with a bed for the night because that kid had an unfortunate family situation that would have left him homeless for the night had a teammate's family not stepped up and given him a place to stay for the night.  Yep, you got it, impermissible benefit.  Coach and school penalized.  The difficulty is coming up with rules that can't be taken advantage of.  Where do you draw the line?   If paying for an Uber is OK, why can't you just buy the kid a car instead?  More convenient for all parties.  If you can buy a kid a meal, why can't you take his family grocery shopping and let them stock up?  Or, better yet, just give then a gift card and let them spend the money as they please.  What do you do when one school offers up a $1,000 gift card, but another school is willing to give the kid a $2,000 gift card?  Do we really want to turn high school sports into professional sports?
    • Some kids NEED to transfer to get in the best position to change the trajectory of their entire life. Could literally save their life. Difference between going to college and being stuck in your neighborhood getting lost to streets.    And I can only speak for myself, but I’m more interested in a at-risk kid changing his situation for the better in hopes of saving his life than your favorite high school team losing a game because he transferred from your favorite school.
    • I wouldn’t be so critical of the FHSAA if they didn’t lie and say they give 2 craps about student athletes. I wish people would just be honest. But I guess if they were honest, it would mess up their hustle.
    • Wait are you saying there is a rule that bars an adult mentor who coaches young men a sport from helping a struggling student athlete and his family with transportation? Whoa that’s next level crazy.    “Hey coach I’m on the side of the road and almost got hit. I’m miles from school and it’s 110 degrees out. Can you get me a ride?” ”Sorry. Some turds 6 hours away in Gainesville said I can’t. Hope you don’t get hit or pass out.”
    • Say what you want, justify it however you want, wish the rules weren't what they are, but there is no question that a coach or other school representative paying for Uber rides for kids playing sports is a violation of the existing FHSAA rules.  Period.  And Teddy Bridgewater may be or have been an elite athlete, may be or become an excellent high school football coach, and/or may have his heart in the right place, but tweeting out a message to the world that you have done something that undoubtedly constitutes a violation of the rules is just plain stupid.
