That would be refreshing.  New guy here. Who follows  SW / Suncoast FL?  I pull for the Tarpons at Charlotte High.

Good luck, let's just hope we get to watch this season. 0-0 is much worse than 5-5.

Great to have THE Silver King and THEE best Boat Captain of SW FL on the board... Yes they talk football here and there are some people who represent most corners of the state.  Also... Politics is strictly band and pretty much anything Neutral posted in the past 3 months (or his entire existence for that) will likely but cut and banned on site.

@ColumbiaHighFan2017class I finally got the old guy over here lol.

Thanks Peezy, my brother!

Columbia, Venice and Palmetto are always tough, lots of athletes and good coaching. Think both graduated QBs last year. But Venice is really good in getting transfers to key positions they need to make a run.

Welcome to this message board Silver King. It is great to have you contributing, and the Huddle just got a great new addition.

Namesakes for their county's in SW FL are always competitive. After that, in Lee County it varies from year to year based on transfers. What the athletes feel (or are presented) to be the team with the best shot at a deep run. Dunbar is always loaded and has been competitive, North has made a few runs.

In Charlotte County, The Tarpons are in a tough district- last year the district produced four playoff teams and the Tarpons just made it in the 4th spot. They got on a hot streak to get a rematch with District Champ, Palmetto in the Regional Final, but got thumped. The other two teams that made it, Port Charlotte and Bradon River will be competitive.

Charlotte has a new HC, new DC, new OC, new QB Coach. Think they will likely update their offense, so this will be a  year for the team to gain experience as players and coaches. I have confidence in the system, and the coaches who stayed and took over the key vacancies, all home grown Tarps, my sons played with two of them. We have a very good QB returning and some skills, need some O-line help. But my expectations are realistic.

South Fort Myers supposed to be decent? I know they got the former Douglas coach over there a few years ago and they made playoffs last year but I'm curious if they supposed to build off of last year

Well, they lost to all the teams I mentioned and they'll have to crack into that group first, to make a deep run, but they got to the playoffs. We didn't play them last season so I'm not that familiar with who they return.  Overall from a few years ago, they were a team that played hard.

Again, a  new coach has to make waves quick without Top Shelf players in Lee County, because once they develop them there has been tendency to leave, and that has been a trait before the so called Free Agency era. Island Coast is a great example, 10 years ago they were a very competitive program - where the kids were going, but since  have been through a bunch of head coaches. They develop athletes to a certain point then they go free agent.

Hey Sliver King or Wavebb; either of you know anything about Cypress Lake or any of the other teams in 5A District 13? Cypress looks like they been on an upswing the last couple of years. I figure that district comes down to either them or Desoto again this year.

Not sure what they have coming back, but they have played well; 2 of their 3 losses were by a TD or less (South FM and Payoff loss)  and they threw up some offensive scores. I listened to the end of their game with Ft Myers last year coming home from one of our games in Lee. They gave Ft Myers all they could handle.

Hows Wachula going to be this season, HWY17?.

We will be lucky to go 5-5 again. Playing a very tough schedule that has Port Charlotte, North Marion, Lake Gibson, Vero Beach, Lake Wales, Sebring.  We lack depth but do have some athletes that are fun to watch. The running back will be in his 3rd season starting. The likely QB also plays on defense but saw a few snaps last season.

    • We have the so-called academies for just about every other sport, so why not football. Volleyball and soccer clubs are the development ground for top HS players in that sport. College recruiters actually farm the clubs more than the HS teams. Youth sports, including high school, have reached the level where a high percentage of your top athletes are receiving private training in their sport. Both my grandsons play HS football and they train with private coaches. The younger brother is a QB and for at least the past five years, he has attended QB camps around this country, in places like California, Texas, and Florida. He has spent a couple weeks each Summer, excluding this past Summer, at IMG Academy. He also has a private coach here locally with whom he trains 2-3 Saturdays a month, year long. The kid who plays multiple team sports is the exception now, as compared to years ago when you played a different sport each season. The training is expensive, but you can see when kids have received private training compared to kids playing on athletic ability alone. For skill position players, 7v7 has become a "must" rather than just another way to play a little more football during the year. Recruiters are at just about every weekend tournament and playing on a select "all-star" team gets a kid more exposure. Specialization has taken over HS sports.
    • The question is not whether we should have hs recruiting or not.  We already do.  The question is to what extent we should try to regulate.   If it is unhealthy for grade school kids to be solicited by hs coaches, what are we doing as a society from a regulatory standpoint to protect the kids from college coaches and scouts?
    • Johnny Jones, a 7th grader at Eisenhower Middle School, recently picked up his fifth offer to play high school football.  The offer came from Westside High School, the only remaining school in the city that had not previously offered the 12-year old athlete.   Westside Coach, Herman Boone IV, told reporters:  "Jones is a stud.  He's a foot taller than everyone else in his class.  We were worried that perhaps he had topped out; that's why we hadn't offered him yet.  But we had our doctors examine Johnny last week and they tell us that he has plenty of room to grow.  That was good enough for us.  Johnny's second cousin's great aunt on his mother's side was an Eagle way back when, so we're hoping that family tie will give us an edge over the other schools in town."    Boone was overheard talking to Johnny's mother on the phone last night and promising that Johnny's family wouldn't have to pay another dime for his public high school education. Jones has had a strong season playing for his middle school flag team, playing on both sides of the ball. Coach Boone indicated that he was hoping to get Jones to make the 3.5 mile trip over to Westside to visit the campus and "see what high school life is all about."  Boone got into trouble a few years back when he was accused of arranging recruits to shadow with Senior cheerleaders who 'knew their way around more than just the campus.'   Boone has assured Westside administrators that he will assign Jones to "a certified 10th grade nerd . . . probably a band member, but we haven't ruled out a member of the drama club quite yet."  Westside's rival, Central High School, first made an offer to Jones when he was in the 3rd grade at Roosevelt Elementary.  Central Coach Bull Spellacheck told reporters at the time that he "could just tell Jones was going to be a beast" and that he wanted to be like one of the coaches on the Voice and be the first one to turn his chair around for Jones . . . something he has reminded Jones of once a week for the last four years.  "Hey, it's worked for Kelly Clarkson, so it should work for me.  I even got Johnny a  cool 'Team Bull'  jacket to wear once he picks us."  Jones is expected to announce his decision next month at a signing ceremony that ESPN88 will cover live. The exact time will be determined once the Jones family can actually find baseball hats for each of the five high schools in town to use for the ceremony.    HIgh school recruiting???  Um, no thanks.
    • I'll go with Fernandina Beach (beating West Nassau 34-22).  Bolles then stopped the Pirate playoff win streak at one.
